Bearing Good Fruit
2/11/2016

“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham…You do the deeds of your father.” John 8:39, 41 (NKJV)

The hypocritical Pharisees angrily confronted Jesus because of what He was teaching in the Temple “I speak what I have seen with My Father” (John 8:38).  He then went on to tell them they were doing what they had seen with their father—inferring their father was the devil. Outraged at what they were hearing, they professed, “Abraham is our father” (John 8:39), inferring he was their Spiritual father, and that they were following in his footsteps of faith.  But Jesus tells them straight out“If you were Abraham’s children, you would do the works of Abraham… You do the deeds of your father.”

And it is the same for every person today—we will find ourselves consistently doing the deeds of our Spiritual father. These Pharisees were entrusting their salvation to the wrong thing—believing they were saved based on their lineage from Abraham, and their going to church, and attempting to live a good life.  But their hearts were hard, and they were pridefully stubborn in their man made traditions, and as a result the fruit in their lives was rotten—and full of lies. So Jesus was implicating they were not children of faith, like Abraham, but were children of Satan—and their works testified of it—their fruit was of Satan, rather than God.

You’ve heard that expression, “The apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree?"  This is exactly what Jesus was speaking of when He said, “…every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit."  A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit”  (Matthew 7:17-18).

It does no good for us to attempt to bear good fruit in our own efforts, because we cannot.  Our fruit comes directly from our relationship with our spiritual father (John 15:5), and Satan knows this. And so he has devised many ways to keep man from finding the absolute truth of God in Christ Jesus, and one of these ways is through his counterfeit religions, and beliefs (2 Cor. 11:13-15).  And through these false religions and lies, Satan will deceive people into thinking they are right with God, even though they are not.  This pride from false security will actually keep them from receiving the Gospel message (2 Cor. 4:3-4; 11:13-15; cf. 1 Tim. 4:1).

What does God’s word tell us about being saved, and about how we can become His children?

We are clearly told we must place our faith in Jesus Christ to be born again if we are to see the Kingdom of Heaven and become sons of God (John 3:3, 13-16; Rom. 10:9-10; Eph. 2:8-9; Gal. 3:26).

For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus. Galatians 3:26 (NKJV)

We can be sure of this—our spiritual parentage is what will determine our nature, our fruit, and our destiny.  If we become “born again,” then God is our father.  If we are not born again in Christ Jesus, then Satan is our father (Matt. 7:17-18; John 3:3, 7; Eph. 2:3; 2 Pet. 1:4).

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional, how can we be assured we are children of God, and what do our actions (works) show?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Can you see the fruit of God in your actions, and way of living as a result of your relationship with Him?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek a closer relationship with the Heavenly Father, and the Lord through the leading of the Holy Spirit as you read your Bible and apply the truth of it to your life.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for allowing me to be called a child of God.  Help me to remember that I am Your child, and therefore I should be producing good fruit in my life.  Help me to see Your perfect will for each of my actions and reactions.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
