What Do You Believe?

And He said to them, “You are from beneath; I am from above. You are of this world; I am not of this world. Therefore I said to you that you will die in your sins; for if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins.” John 8:23-24 (NKJV)

The principle reason for our sharing Jesus Christ with other people is so they may know of His love, and of His sacrificial death for their sins.  We explain the gospel message in its simplicity (Rom. 10:9-10; 1 Cor. 15:1-4), and then ask them if they would like to have a relationship with Jesus, and receive Him into their heart. In essence, we are asking them to believe in Him.

From the first verses in the book of John, we can clearly learn Jesus is God (John 1:1-3), and we see Him making many other claims as well—

·      He claimed to be the Messiah (John 4:25-26)

·      He claimed to be the Savior (John 3:17)

·      He claimed to be equal to the Father (John 5:18-23)

·      He said, I Am the bread of life” (John 6:35, 48)

·      He said, I Am the light of the world.” (John 8:12)

Despite Jesus’ astounding claims, and His many miraculous works before the Jewish people, many of them—including the Pharisees—chose not to believe in Him.  So Jesus removes any ambiguity as to what was required of them, by telling them, if you do not believe that I am He, you will die in your sins” (John 8:24).  I think it is important to understand, the word, “He” used in this verse does not appear in the original Greek text.  So Jesus actually told them, “If you do not believe I Am you will die in your sins.”

This is interesting, because in the Old Testament book of Exodus, we can see God speaking to Moses upon the mountaintop, and Moses asks God, “Indeed, when I come to the children of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is His name?’ what shall I say to them?” And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you’ ” (Ex. 3:13-14).

Jesus is God!  The enemy would love to try to take away Jesus’ deity, and any chance Satan gets, he introduces false doctrine to make Jesus less than what our Bibles clearly teach.  Jesus could just as easily be standing before any one of us today, asking us—

Do you believe I Am the Messiah? (John 4:25-26)

Do you believe I Am the Savior? (John 3:17)

Do you believe I Am equal to the Father? (John 5:18-23)

Do you believe I Am the bread of life? (John 6:35, 48)

Do you believe I Am the light of the world? (John 8:12)

Do you believe I Am God? (John 1:1-3; 14:7)

Do you believe I Am the Alpha and the Omega? (Rev. 22:13)

Do you believe I Am He? (John 8:24)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these truths today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 8:23-24, what was the reason Jesus gave for people dying in their sins?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you believe Jesus is who He said He was? Have you placed your only hope for salvation in Him?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Hold fast to the truths you have been given about Jesus, and be willing to share Him with others.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, I thank You for Your Son. I place my faith in Him alone for my salvation, and I choose to follow Him as my Lord. Help me to know Your perfect will as I read Your word today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
