Choosing To Walk In Faith
12/10/2015

As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him…Colossians 2:6 (NKJV)

In the book of Exodus we can see a very sad story of the Israelites needlessly wandering in the wilderness for decades, all because they did not believe in the promises of God. From the day He delivered them from the bondage of Egypt God had provided miraculously for them—He provided water for them to drink, and manna for them to eat, and yet they still lacked the faith to believe what God had for them was good enough or sufficient, and as such they chose not to submit to His will to enter the promised land.  What followed in their lives was division, discontentment, doubt, and murmuring.

All throughout the Bible we see the absolute need for faith.  We are told, “Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Heb. 11:1).  Our faith in Jesus Christ is as essential to our spiritual and eternal life as is oxygen is to our physical lives.  God gives us the faith to believe in Him, but this faith is not something we can produce; it is simply a trustful response that is itself evoked by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 2:8-9).  It is however, our responsibility to exercise and walk in this faith (cf. Col. 2:6-7).  God doesn’t force us to accept His gift of faith to believe in Jesus but we are told, “Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him” (Heb. 11:6).

Satan loves to plant seeds of doubt in the minds of every one of us, because he knows if we allow these seeds to root we will eventually stumble in our faith and Christian walk. In the Book of Colossians believers are encouraged, “As you therefore have received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted and built up in Him and established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving” (Col. 2:6-7).

Q:         So how did we receive Jesus initially?

We simply received Him in faith to be our Lord and Savior; we received Him in His love for us, and we received Him in His truth—we chose to receive all He had for us as we were freed from our bondage.  And this is exactly how we are to walk each and every day—in the same faith, love, and truth of His Word.  We are to live our lives in union with Jesus, and we are to pattern our lifestyle after His.

He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked. 1 John 2:6 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.
