Caution! Pride Kills!
10/15/2015

Before destruction the heart of a man is haughty, And before honor is humility. Proverbs 18:12 (NKJV)

I wish there were warning signs on the road cautioning us against an improper walk with God, just like there are for warning us of the approaching curves or rough road conditions ahead.  Can you imagine a yellow warning caution sign that said, “Going Wrong Directions With God — U-Turns Okay here.”  Or how about this for a sign, “Caution!  Pride Kills!”   I have to wonder how many people would take note and apply the warning as opposed to those who would continue in their prideful ways.  We can be funny (strange) people in that we often will do the very opposite of what we know to be wise or correct.

Such was the case of two commanders of ocean vessels back in 1986.  The two men were on a collision course in the Black Sea off the coast of Russia, yet neither adjusted the heading of their vessels.  The result was a horrific collision resulting in the deaths of hundreds of innocent people who had been hurled into the icy waters.  Each captain harbored pride within their hearts and they were willing to die rather than humble themselves and seek an alternate route.

As crazy as this story may sound most of us have this same stubborn pride within our hearts.  This is not to say we would all make the same tragic mistake as these captains — prideful decisions resulting in the deaths of others — but that there are times when we will pridefully hold fast to our way, our course of action, not caring whether we may be causing emotional injury to others or even the death of a relationship.  In truth when this happens we are really no better than these two captains, because we are suffering from the same type of pride they did.  Would it not have been much wiser to simply choose to be humble and take a different route?

Ultimately our course of travel and action should be God’s course and His ways, and if this is the case then we should always hold fast to our convictions and course of action, but even so it should be done in humility and love.

…Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for “God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble.” 1 Peter 5:5 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray about these things today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn with respect to being prideful and humble?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to humble yourself and submit to God’s way of handling every situation?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord for His wisdom when you find yourself on a collision course because of pride.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for giving me Your Word to teach and guide me.  Help me to see any area where I am being prideful.  Help me to see and walk on the proper path of humility and meekness.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
