Be Faithful In The Small
9/21/2015

He also who had received two talents came and said, “Lord, you delivered to me two talents; look, I have gained two more talents besides them.’ His lord said to him, “Well done, good and faithful servant; you have been faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.’ Matthew 25:22-23 (NKJV)

I recall being out on a bicycle ride through our local mountains and community one morning, and as I was cruising down the road I saw a penny on the ground.  It wasn’t all that shiny, but I did notice the distinct marking of President Lincoln’s head.  I passed by it without much thought.  Within a couple of miles I saw another penny on the ground — this time it was the backside of the penny facing upwards.  Within 15 minutes I had come upon another penny; this time it was like new.  Another 5 miles or so I saw something different down upon the ground, and just as I flew by I could see it was a dime.

I thought to myself, “What is going on today?  Why am I seeing all these coins?”  I was immediately reminded of my youth — of how I used to jump into garbage dumpsters to find soda bottles at the various apartment complexes throughout the town.  I would take these bottles to the store and redeem them for a few pennies.   And if I ever found a penny on the ground, I would always pick it up; thinking to myself, “four more and I will have a nickel.”   But lately I haven’t been doing it as much; figuring the penny wasn’t worth it.

God reminded me of a time when I would have been excited to find these coins.  He reminded me of how I used to take small change like this and save it so I could buy something of worth, and how diligent and faithful I was with just a little.

As I thought about this I felt the Lord’s presence very strongly as these thoughts flowed through my mind —“Be faithful in the small stuff.  Don’t just look for the big opportunities, but stop and take time to invest into the things others may deem less important.  Remember how I took a small boy's lunch and used it to feed thousands of people? (Matt 15:33-39)  I want to do this same thing through you, but you must be a faithful steward with the little I have given you.”

God has given each of us opportunities and provision within our lives.  Opportunities possibly leading to other opportunities, but many of these potential opportunities will not be realized because we didn’t take the first step.  Maybe 13 cents won’t feed the world, but it might make a collective difference in getting something to eat for a homeless person.  And it might be the very platform where God can do a wondrous work — we just need to walk in faith and give Him a chance to use us.

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Choose to allow God to use the little things in your life for greatness.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 25:22-23, what can we learn about our being faithful with what we have been given?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to let God use the small things in your possession for a great work?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Choose to look at what you have as a mighty resource in God’s hands.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, show me how to use what I have been given to the fullest.  Show me how to be a great steward for kingdom purposes.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
