If It Would Reach One More Person

But as for me, when they were sick, My clothing was sackcloth; I humbled myself with fasting; And my prayer would return to my own heart. I paced about as though he were my friend or brother; I bowed down heavily, as one who mourns for his mother. Psalms 35:13-14 (NKJV)

I recall watching a life testimony video a few years ago, and it was of a young woman by the name of Brianna Grisham.  Brianna was 16 years of age when she was afflicted with Steven Johnson Syndrome (SJS)—a rare form of a life-threatening skin condition, in which cell death causes the epidermis to separate from the dermis.  There are only about 300 new cases diagnosed in the United States each year.

One day Brianna broke out in a rash and it had spread over her body.  The rash turned to blisters and the blisters made their way to her throat, causing her airway to be restricted; it was unbearable.  An ambulance responded and she was transported to Loma Linda Medical University.  God’s hand was upon her in every step of this situation, and the doctors were able to correctly diagnose what she was suffering from.  She was given the proper medicine and soon her body was healing.

As Brianna lay in her hospital bed one night, she began to speak to the Lord, asking Him how He was going to use it.  She said that God responded by impressing upon her mind that she was going to reach people with hard hearts.  Brianna concluded her testimony by saying, “If I had to go through it all over again I would, if it would reach one more person.”  As I thought about Brianna’s statement I couldn’t help but be reminded of Jesus’ words in Matthew 18.

“What do you think? If a man has a hundred sheep, and one of them goes astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine and go to the mountains to seek the one that is straying? And if he should find it, assuredly, I say to you, he rejoices more over that sheep than over the ninety-nine that did not go astray.  Even so it is not the will of your Father who is in heaven that one of these little ones should perish." Matthew 18:12-14 (NKJV)

Each of us will encounter tribulation during our lifetime.  God will use every one of these situations to effect change in our mind and heart.  Perhaps we should ask Him how He wants to use these experiences for the betterment of others.  Perhaps, when we see God using these things to bring someone to salvation, we might even have the heart to say what Brianna said, “If I had to go through it all over again I would, if it would reach one more person.”

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Ask God to give you the heart of Jesus, so you might continually say, “One more person.”
