Hearing Gods Resonating Notes

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

Have you ever been reading your Bible and had a strong thought enter your mind?  I know I have, and it’s as if I know in my heart it is the Lord speaking to me.  Have you ever been thinking about a project or a decision you need to make and suddenly you get a great idea?  Again, I have, and the only way I can explain it is it's like a resonating note of a perfectly played instrument.  You know the ones I am speaking of; they are the notes that just seem to reverberate and have a continuing effect within the listener’s ear.

To me, when I get these types of thoughts throughout the day I am excited, because they are the type of thoughts to guide me in doing something — they seem to come with a sense of purpose and strength.  I have found these thoughts being given to me when I am working through business issues, when I am giving counsel to someone, and even when I am given ideas for the devotionals I write.  They can come while reading my Bible, or when listening to someone speak, but I know when I get them they are really a gift from God.

Q:         So how can we know if these resonating notes within our minds are from God?

The easiest way to know is when they come in alignment with the Scriptures within our Bibles.  If I find a thought being strongly impressed upon my heart and mind and it lines up properly with His Word, and I am finding I have a peace about it, then I can trust it is a thought from the Holy Spirit to guide me in my decision making process (John 14:26; 16:13).

Now on the other hand, If I receive thoughts leading or tempting me to do something directly against what I am told not to do in God’s Word then I can be fairly sure these thoughts are not from God.  If this happens, then I take these thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ and cast them down (2 Cor. 10:5).

I think one of the most important things for us to do if we truly want to hear God’s resonating notes, is to be actively listening for them.  If we are so busy filling our mind with other stuff, or we’re not taking the time to ask, seek, and knock through prayer and the reading of His Word, then the chances are pretty good we won’t be clearly receiving or discerning God’s guiding thoughts.

"My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me." John 10:27 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Take time to prayerfully read your Bible.  Take time to ask, seek, and knock in your prayers to God.  Be diligent to listen to the messengers He sends into your life.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 10:27, what promise are we given by Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you actively listening to the voice of God?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make it your desire to hear God’s voice today, and to seek His will in everything you do.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER: Father, thank You for speaking to me through Your Word.  Thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit to remind me of the things Your Son spoke to me through the Holy Scriptures.  Guide and lead me today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
