Choosing To Walk In The Spirit
8/19/2015

If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Galatians 5:25 (NKJV)

Listening to God and Obeying Him are a matter of our will — just as hardening our hearts and refusing to obey are a matter of our will.   If we are to walk in obedience to our Lord then we must be willing to submit to His will for our lives and choose to walk in the Spirit.

Q:         So, why is it so important to walk in the Spirit?

We are told, if we walk in the Spirit then we shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh (Gal. 5:16).  If we are to walk in the Spirit then we must be willing to be led by the Spirit.

Q:         How are we led by the Spirit of God?

The Holy Spirit illuminates the Scriptures, as we are faithful to read, study, pray, and meditate upon them.  As we genuinely seek the will of our Lord through the Scriptures, He will allow the Holy Spirit to provide interpretation so we can then apply them to our lives (John 14:26).  The Holy Spirit now prompts us as believers through the Scriptures to obey God. The Holy Spirit will convict us through the Scriptures when we sin, and He will strengthen and encourage us through them as well.

Here is the best part; the Holy Spirit is available to empower every one of us as believers, to turn away from our sin, and to obey God when we are tempted.  It is important for us to be continually filled with the Spirit.  We are told this in Ephesians.

And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18 (NKJV)

Q:         So what does it mean to be filled with the Spirit?

Being filled with the Spirit transpires when we allow the Holy Spirit to empower and direct us as we fully trust, depend, and submit to God.  It is when we come in agreement with God — allowing Him to produce His attitude and actions in our life —allowing Him to lead us into obedience.

The sinful nature of our flesh will almost certainly fall back into pursuing the desires of this world once we have allowed our focus to be shifted from God and His Word to the things of this world.  Therefore, it is imperative for us to set our mind upon the things of God daily — we must choose to be filled with the Spirit, and choose to walk in newness of life.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:1-2 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Remember it will always be a matter of your will whether you choose to submit or harden your heart.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 3:1-2 what should we be setting our minds upon?  What shouldn’t we be setting our minds upon?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What do you find yourself setting your mind upon?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Make a conscious decision today to set your mind upon the things of God.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, forgive me for the times I have set my mind on the things of this world and have therefore longed for them instead of You.  Help me to see these things for what they are today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
