Treating The Fungus
8/17/2015

What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Romans 6:1-2 (NKJV)

One of the shrubs we have is called Photinia Red-Tip.  It is a wonderful, large, evergreen shrub with attractive foliage.  Each spring brings brilliant new foliage.  A few years back we noticed these black spots on the leaves of the Red-tip, along with the fact the leaves didn’t stay as brilliantly red as they normally do.  I did some investigation and found out the reason.  It appears most of the Red-tip’s in the southern portion of the United States have been devastated with a fungus over the last ten years.  One nursery owner joked, “There are two types of Red-tips — those with the fungus, and those that will get it.”

The fungus originates on the leaves, causing the leaf to prematurely die.  The diseased leaves can easily infect the healthy ones around them, causing the fungus to easily spread.  If left untreated it will eventually make its way to the root system.  Once it makes its way here it is very hard to control it, and it will eventually cause health problems that could lead to death.  The information saddened me, but it also warned me to take action to treat the fungus.

As I thought about this fungus on these shrubs I thought about how it sounds a lot like sin. Sin is just like a fungus — if left untreated it will cause much destruction, sickness and even death.   Sin can easily corrupt those it is around, and just like the fungus on the Red-tips it can keep us from blooming the way God intended in our Christian walk.

Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV)

God has provided a cure for the fungus of sin, and it is through a saving relationship with His Son Jesus.  Our sins have been nailed to the cross once we have placed our faith in Him (Col. 2:14), but we must continually be washed with the water of His Word (the Bible), and stand fast against giving sin a platform in our lives.  We have been told to put off our old ways and put on the new man, which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness (Eph. 4:24).

Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. Romans 6:3-4 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.   Stand fast against the temptations of the enemy today and choose to put on the new man.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Romans 6:1-2 what can we learn about how we are to live once we have made a profession of faith in Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Can you see where evil company has corrupted your good character at times?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the empowerment of the Holy Spirit so you can walk in newness of life today.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER TODAY:  Father, thank You for cleansing me from all sin.  Thank You for giving me the Holy Spirit to help me.  Forgive me for the times where I have not utilized Your great power to resist the temptation of the enemy.  Help me to walk in newness of life today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
