Having The Joy of The Lord
3/24/2015

Restore to me the joy of Your salvation, And uphold me by Your generous Spirit. Psalms 51:12 (NKJV)

Most all of us have heard Disneyland’s advertising tag line, “The Happiest place on earth.” It is a phrase put forth to introduce and foster the idea there could be no other place where we could possibly be happier than within their kingdom.  Well, I love Disneyland and I will admit there have been many happy times for my family and me throughout our lives, as we have been blessed to spend time there.  But I know there is another kingdom where everyone will be much happier.

I think the type of happiness we most often strive to find is the type that is based upon our circumstances. The problem with this type of happiness is it will always change depending on what we are facing or how we feel.  It can be affected in a negative way by the traffic jam on the way to work, or positively by our getting off of work on Friday night.

However, as Christian men and women, our happiness or joy is not based on our conditions or circumstances—it is based on an inner truth of God living within us.  As we walk and live in the power of God’s strength we will be filled with His joy—it is a byproduct of the Holy Spirit and a manifestation of our hope in living in Heaven.

This is not to say we will not face difficult times.  But as believers we should purpose to never let the difficult times make us bitter—we should allow them to make us better.  Knowing God is in control and has a perfect plan allows us to find peace and even joy in the midst of our trials.

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the LORD is your strength.” Nehemiah 8:10 (NKJV)

Q:         How can we find joy in the tough times and trials we face in life?

We find our joy in the promises and wisdom found in God’s Word, as He guides us through every obstacle and challenge.  We find joy knowing we are saved and will spend eternity with our Savior.  We find joy as we come into His presence in prayer and fellowship with Him.  Just spending time with our Lord will fill us with an abundant joy.  We can see this spoken of by King David in the Psalms.

You will show me the path of life; In Your presence is fullness of joy; At Your right hand are pleasures forevermore. Psalms 16:11 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Let’s choose to be joyful today.  Let’s choose to allow God to make us better because of what we are facing.  Let’s choose to reflect the joy of the Lord to those around us.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Psalms 16:11 where did David find his joy?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you taking time throughout your busy day to spend time with God in prayer?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s choose to make time throughout our day to spend time with our Lord in prayer.

Let’s make this our prayer today: Father, thank You for the joy you have placed within my heart. Thank You for saving me and for the promises contained within Your Word.  Help me to remember these things when I am tempted to lack joy in my life.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
