Using The Shield of Faith
3/10/2015

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)

Have you ever watched a Superman show, or cartoon?  Anyone who has knows he is referred to as, “The Man of Steel.”  Supposedly nothing could harm him except for a substance known as kryptonite.  Kryptonite came from the planet Krypton where Superman (alias Clark Kent) came from.  As the story goes the planet exploded and these green chunks of kryptonite went flying through the galaxy.  In essence these pieces of kryptonite would make him weak, powerless and would even lead to his death if he continued to be subjected to it.   Those who were evil knew this and they would use this kryptonite to attempt to destroy him.

I don’t know about you but it sounds to me a lot like Satan.  And our kryptonite is pretty much anything tempting us to sin.    Satan and his emissaries are attacking every one of us, each and every day.  I believe they watch and study us to determine what they believe our personal kryptonite is, so they can cause use it to cause us to become weak and stumble in our faith.

Q:         What is your kryptonite?  What tempts you and causes you to take your eyes off of Jesus and makes you feel weak or even powerless in your walk with God?

Now thankfully for Superman he had one thing allowing him to be protected against kryptonite, and it was lead.  The lead would shield him as long as he kept it between him and kryptonite.

As Christian men and women, we can be encouraged to know we have been given protection as well.  We have been given a shield to defend us against those things tempting us in our Christian walk—it is called, “the shield of faith.”

Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand…above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. Ephesians 6:13, 16 (NKJV)

With our shield of faith we can extinguish every fiery dart shot at us by the devil — fiery darts being those lies tempting us to believe we will be better off if we act upon the temptation.  They include every seductive thought, such as doubt, fear, worry, greed, covetousness, and vanity.

So how does the shield of faith work?

The shield of faith works when we choose to believe (place our faith in) God’s promises rather than Satan’s lies.  When we do this it allows us to counteract these lies and put out the flames to prevent them from spreading into our minds and hearts.  In addition to this shield of faith, we have been given great power in Christ Jesus.

Behold, I give you the authority to trample on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy, and nothing shall by any means hurt you. Luke 10:19 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let’s choose to utilize our Shield of Faith throughout each day.  Let’s choose to use the power of the Holy Spirit to trample on anything tempting us to do evil.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Luke 10:19 what have we been given by Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What is your kryptonite?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s choose to fix our mind upon the guidance and many promises of God within His word rather than fixing our eyes upon the temptation.  Let’s place our faith in Christ empowering us to overcome any temptation.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for giving me the power to overcome the wiles and temptations of the evil one.  Help me to see Your truth and will in everything I face today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
