What Do You Like?

He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will be destroyed. Proverbs 13:20 (NKJV)

Have you ever noticed those little buttons on the bottom of various Internet pages titled, “Like” or “Don’t Like”?  They are little tools designed to guide future people to whether something was helpful, or recommended to read, or just to show how many people like it or don’t like it.  I call them the, “The not so silent majority” because even though they are not necessarily writing the content of the blog or article they are the ones weighing in their personal opinion, as they cast their vote and show others of their approval or disapproval.

I had the opportunity to personally witness some of the fallout and damage done from a facebook posting.  What was written in the original posting was vulgar, offensive, degrading and unfortunately very hurtful to the young Christian person who was being spoken about.  But what hurt this person just as much was there were two other people who said they liked what was said.

As I thought about this whole incident I began to really realize how far reaching the consequences were.  Obviously the person who it was written about was deeply hurt, but there were so many more who could have been affected.  This is because one of the two people who hit the “Like” button is a professed follower of Jesus.  I had to wonder how many non-believers and believers alike would be scratching their heads while looking at this page in their network of acquaintances — wondering why someone who says they love the Lord would “Like” something so ugly.

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. 1 John 4:7 (NKJV)

I guess the point I am attempting to make is this — As Christians, we get a chance to make a difference when we voice our opinion or vote for something. We can actually be saying a lot when we don’t stand up for what is right or by going along with, or laughing at someone’s comments.

Who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.  Romans 1:32(NKJV)

I pray we would all understand the responsibility and opportunity we have at our disposal.  People can be influenced and even drawn to Jesus by witnessing our love for one another.

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these biblical truths today.  Let’s make it our choice to think about our actions before we do them. Let’s choose the “Don’t Like” button when we get the opportunity to cast our vote on the evil things of this world.  Let’s ask the Lord to change our heart if we find we desire to do what is wrong. Let's be careful when we are tempted to push the "Like it" button on our computers or in our heart.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Proverbs 13:20 what can we learn about the people we make our close companions?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you guarding your associations with others closely?  Are you willing to speak up in love when they are wrong?  Are you willing to defend others against slanderous attacks?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord for His will in everything we do.  If we can be a light unto others then let us do it as if unto the Lord.  Let’s guard our close relationships carefully and surround ourselves with those who will hold us accountable and speak truth into our lives.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for Your great wisdom within Your Word.  Help us to see when others are dragging us down with their sinful actions, and give us the strength to be a true light into their lives.  If their hearts are hard and committed to continue to walk in disobedience, then give us the strength to keep these relationships within the boundaries of Your will.  We ask these things in Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
