No More Running With The Pack

For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles - when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you. They will give an account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. 1 Peter 4:3-5 (NKJV)

There are many people who defend their personal associations with bad company by saying, “I’m just trying to be a light unto them.”  I agree we are to be salt and light to everyone around us, but we must be careful to guard ourselves against being caught up and dragged down by those who are bent on walking in sin and who long for this world.  All too often a simple association will lead to partaking in the very activities they are a part of.

Do not be deceived: "Evil company corrupts good habits." 1 Corinthians 15:33 (NKJV)

We need to be mindful of our relationships and guard them closely.  I want to be clear here; we will all have different types of relationships with people, some will know the Lord, and others will not — many will be walking in sin, and we must be a light to all, remembering what is at stake (1 Cor. 15:33; 2 Thess. 3:6).  Those who are walking in sin will either be drawn to the light, or because of their love for darkness they will hate it.

For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. John 3:20 (NKJV)

If we are going to be a true light to others who are walking in sin it will entail our speaking up to challenge, exhort or perhaps encourage, and it will always be done in love — imitating Jesus (Eph. 5:1).  But there is also a time where we simply walk away from those who practice sin.  1 Peter 4:3-5 tells us those who practice sinful lifestyles will think it strange when we choose not to run with them, but we can also be assured a seed will have been planted, as they will see our commitment to our Lord and Savior.

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things today.  Let's choose to stand firm in our walk with God.  Let's choose to be salt and light to those who don't know the Lord, and to those who may be stumbling.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures within this devotional, what can we learn with respect to our having fellowship with those who choose to walk in sin?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to be a light unto everyone you associate with, whether it means speaking up or simply walking away?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let's choose to look at every relationship as an opportunity to be a reflection of God's light, and may He be glorified and given great honor in our actions.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Heavenly Father, we thank You for Your love for us, and Lord it is our desire to be a light and reflection of Your love to those around us.  We want to be able to be what You have called us to be, but we confess we need You to guide us.  Help us Lord to have a proper heart and balance.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
