A Little Over The Top

For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works. Titus 2:11-14 (NKJV)

A few years back a good friend of mine asked me to speak to his daughter, as they were having some difficulties in their relationship.  I agreed to speak with her, and I listened as she shared her heart.  I’ll never forget this one statement she made to me — she said, “I want my old dad back.”  I asked her what she meant by this statement, and she replied, “All he does now is talk about the Lord and the Bible, and he is always asking me if there is anything He can pray for me about.”

As we talked she shared how she was okay with him being a believer, but she said his actions (in his faith) were, “A little over the top.” It made me really sad to hear this, so I asked her, “In your opinion, why do you feel his actions are over the top?”  She said, “It is just too much!”

I thought about her statements and wondered how many people would agree with her about him being over the top in his zealousness for the Lord.  The funny thing is my friend had been a Christian for the last 25 years, but it wasn’t until just a couple of months prior that he decided to fully surrender his life and make Jesus his Lord.  Man, what a difference!  I will be the first to say it is amazing what God is doing in and through this man.  The agape love and fruit of repentance is more visible each and every day and his commitment to honor God continues to grow.

As I continued to talk to his daughter the Lord guided me to share with her in detail what Jesus had done for each of us upon the Cross of Calvary—how he was spit upon, cursed and beaten so we could be forgiven and reconciled unto God.  I shared how we had been bought and paid for with His shed blood, and how the Lord gave us the commandment to share this news with the world — how we were to live and preach Christ if we were truly his disciples.  I explained to her that this was why her dad was so zealous for the Lord.

As I left my friends home I began to reflect on the things spoken of and I thought, “Lord, if talking about you, sharing you, praising you, and praying to you for others is over the top, then that’s what I want to be until I see you face-to-face.”

I want to encourage you to think and pray upon these things.  Let’s choose to be wholly surrendered to our Lord.  Let’s choose to be committed to speaking and acting in ways honoring to Him.  Let’s remember we are not our own and if we are to live, then we are to live for the Lord.

For none of us lives to himself, and no one dies to himself. For if we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. Therefore, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. Romans 14:7-8 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION:  According to Romans 14:7-8 how should we live and whom do we belong?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to do everything unto the Lord?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s choose to use our life to glorify God and to share the Love of Christ.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for sending Jesus to die for us.  Thank You for loving us so much.  Father, help each of us in our commitment to being the best Christian witness and follower of Jesus Christ.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
