Prayer In Our Playbook

...pray without ceasing, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

All too often, prayer is looked at as our last resort, or as our 4th down - might as well punt - play.  But prayer should never be our last option, because it is a pivotal part of our life, both spiritually and physically.  As I have said before, prayer is the conduit between the Lord and us — it is how we communicate with Him, and it is pivotal in our being fueled to do what we have been called to do.

Without prayer we are operating independent from God in our own limited abilities, which is scary when you really think about it. I have found when I operate in my own strength, wisdom, and understanding I will come to the end of myself soon enough, and I will realize my independence from God is causing me to move in the wrong direction.  Let’s face it, if we are not praying regularly to God, seeking His will and way to deal with every issue, then we will be likely to do things wrong.  If it is our heart's desire to continue to do things wrong, then it will hinder our ability to be used by God.  We will be put on the sidelines until we are willing to surrender and submit to Him, and this starts with prayer.

We must remember we are in a battle with Satan and his emissaries.  Their objective is to keep us from being used in ministry and to destroy our lives.  Seeking God in prayer for His power, wisdom, discernment, and guidance will keep us and our brothers and sisters in the Lord on the right path and safe from the enemy.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore…praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints— Ephesians 6:12-14, 18 (NKJV)

Speaking of the importance of prayer, Corrie Ten Boom said, “Don’t pray when you feel like it.  Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it.  A man is powerful on his knees.”   This statement really emphasizes how we need to structure prayer into the proper place of priority it should hold in our lives.

John Bunyan said, “Prayer will make a man cease from sin, or sin will entice a man to cease from prayer.”   I think this makes perfect sense; after all if we’re talking to God then we probably won’t be listening to the devil.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things.  Let’s not allow the enemy to distract us from tapping into the power of God.  Let’s not allow the enemy to tempt us into walking in our own power.  Let’s not allow the enemy to cause us to be put on the shelf.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Thessolonians 5:17 how often should we be praying?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to pray about everything?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s choose to make prayer the foundation of every decision we make.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, we thank You for allowing us to be used in the work of Your Kingdom.  We invite You into our lives today and ask You to use us mightily.  May our prayers be in alignment with Your perfect will.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
