Our Blessed Hope
12/17/2014

For our citizenship is in heaven, from which we also eagerly wait for the Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, who will transform our lowly body that it may be conformed to His glorious body, according to the working by which He is able even to subdue all things to Himself. Philippians 3:20-21 (NKJV)

Back in 1986 the Boston Red Sox played the New York Mets in the World Series.  Boston led the series 3 games to 2 in the best of seven and they were trying to wrap it all up in game six.  Then came the hit of Mookie Wilson; it rolled slowly towards first base and through the legs of first basemen Bill Buckner.  Millions of viewers were stunned as the Mets went on to win this game and eventually go on to claim the title as World Champions of baseball.

Bill Buckner was lambasted in the media and it cost he and his family greatly for years.  Was this fair to this professional ball player?  Absolutely not!  Bill Buckner was a fantastic player and yet many people will choose to not grade him upon all the amazing plays and accomplishments over his twenty-year career — but instead they’ll base it solely on the one single play he didn’t make on October 25th 1986. Despite playing good enough throughout his career to be voted into the Hall of Fame it has not happened.

I am thankful God doesn’t judge us in this way.  In fact, it seems to be just the opposite.  I think we can all say we have made many errors over our lifetime, and yet as Christians we’ve made one great play when we chose to believe in Jesus and accept Him into our hearts as Lord and Savior.

…that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9-10 (NKJV)

All too often we can be tempted to feel as though we have blown it so badly that we will not make it to Heaven, but we must take this thought captive (2 Cor. 10:3-5), because it is a lie from Satan, the father of lies (John 8:44).  The truth is Jesus died so we might be forgiven of all our sins — we just need to place our faith in Him.  Once we have, we can be confident that the Holy Spirit has sealed us, and He will testify we are God’s children — we can now have a blessed hope in spending eternity with our Heavenly Father.   Our citizenship is not here, it is in heaven.   In the end we will be inducted into God’s Hall of Fame and it will be glorious.

I want to encourage you today to meditate upon these things.  Let’s continue to praise God for what He is doing in our life, including His transforming us to be more like Jesus.  Let’s continue to focus on obeying Him and seeking His will for everything we do (Rom. 12:1-2).  We have something much better to be living for than a World Series ring; we have a Crown of Life waiting to be placed upon us like a champion who has finished his race strong.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotion, what can we learn with respect to heaven and our getting there?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: What is your blessed hope, and where do you derive it?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord and continue to read His Word.  Let’s allow it to permeate our minds and hearts so we can continue to change, and find our hope.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, thank You for giving us everything we need to find our confidence in You.  Thank You for allowing us to be confident in our salvation.  Lord, help us to continue to change today as we read Your Word.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
