Forgiven - Part II
11/18/2014

For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; As far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgressions from us.. Psalms 103:11-12 (NKJV)

In Part I we learned as Christians, if we are faithful to confess our sins, God is faithful to forgive them. His forgiveness is not based on our ability to live a righteous life, or to keep every law given — His forgiveness of us and His declaration of our being righteous are strictly based on Jesus’ payment upon the cross, along with our belief and confession in Him as our Lord and Savior.

For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.  2 Corinthians 5:21 (NKJV)

In addition to paying for, and forgiving our sin, God purifies us from them.  He cleanses us from the pollution of our sin so we may begin a new life — one filled with a new holy nature. Psalm 103:11-12 puts the removal of our sin in perspective. It says, “For as the heavens are high above the earth, so great is His mercy toward those who fear Him; as far as the east is from the west, So far has He removed our transgression from us…”

Well, we know the Milky Way galaxy is one hundred million light-years long and ten million light-years wide.  So we know God’s love and mercy are far greater than we could even fathom.

It also says that His love if for those who “fear” (respect) Him and His Word.  We simply need to hold God and His Word at the highest priority in our lives.  We do this by having a relationship with Him, by acknowledging Him in our daily activities and decisions; by studying His word, and learning what He wants to teach us, and by allowing Him to transform our lives.

There is one last thing we are promised here in this Psalm — we can be assured each and every sin we have ever committed is as far from God’s presence as could ever be — God has chosen to remember them no more (Heb. 8:12).  This means our sin has been completely and finally dealt with.

We must be careful not to believe Satan’s lie that we are somehow accepted or forgiven by our living a good life, because this has nothing to do with God’s forgiveness.  Our forgiveness is based on God’s grace and by placing our faith in Jesus Christ alone for our salvation (John 14:6; Eph. 2:8-9; Rom. 10:9-10).

I want to encourage you to remember this; God loves you, If you’ve placed your faith in Jesus, then know He forgave you, and there is nothing you can do to earn this love — it is a free gift.  But we have to accept it.  Just like Christmas morning, we have to receive it and open it up, because a gift is worthless unless we receive it.  Grace — unmerited favor — God is Good!

STUDY QUESTION: According to Hebrews 10:16-17, how will we know what is sin?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you ready to accept God’s full forgiveness and start to live with an attitude reflecting the great gift given to you?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: We should be grinning from ear to ear, knowing we have been forgiven, and we have an eternity of life ahead of us.  We should also be sharing this truth to each and every person we have a chance to do so with.

LET’S MAKE THIS OUR PRAYER TODAY: Father, I completely accept and acknowledge I was lost in sin, but now I have been saved by Your grace.  I acknowledge my worth is not based on what I may do this day, but on what was done for me by Your Son on the cross of Calvary.  I have been given freedom from the bondage of spiritual death and sin, and it is my desire to lay my life down this day, and allow You to speak through me to those who You have brought into my life.  Give me the words and the ability to live for You so I may glorify the name of Your son, my Savior.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
