The Orchestra
8/18/2014

For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another. Having then gifts differing according to the grace that is given to us, let us use them: Romans 12:4-6 (NKJV)

A few years ago my wife and I were attending a play at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts.   As we were watching the play from the front row we had a great view of the orchestra pit.  Every sort of musician—from string to brass—sat down under a mesh screen with only the conductor visible to the viewing audience.

As I looked down at each person playing I could see they had a monitor set before them allowing each of them to view the conductor no matter where they were situated.  This allowed them to keep their eyes on him continuously while being able to look at the sheets of music to be played.

One motion from the conductor signaled the beginning of the play, and the musicians began to play beautifully.  Every note was correct and they worked in perfect unity.

It didn’t take long for me to see how this finely tuned orchestra was a great illustration of how our Lord created us to work together within the body of believers—we should be looking unto Him as our conductor.

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith…Hebrews 12:1-2 (NKJV)

God has given us the sheet music of His word to play by, and if we are faithful to follow it we will soon find ourselves in perfect unity with other believers within the body of Christ, and we will be producing something very beautiful to see and hear.

Each of us has been given a unique gift and it is to be used to serve the body.  Each of us can be a part of God’s orchestra, or we can simply play from our own sheet of music—it is our free choice. I want to encourage you today to open God’s sheet music and begin to study the notes.  Ask Him to lead you in applying them to your life.  I promise you—it will be music to your ears.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Hebrews 12:1-2 what are we to keep our eyes fixed upon?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you studying and playing the music sheets God has provided in His Word, or are you winging it and playing by your own?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Keep your eyes upon the Lord today and simply abide by what His Word says to do.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER: Father, thank You for Your mercy and guidance in my life.  Thank You for giving me Your Word to show me how to live.  Help me today to remember what I have read, and remind me so I can make the proper choices today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
