Having a Confidence In Our Salvation

…being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ; Philippians 1:6 (NKJV)

If there were anything I would really want to be confident about, it would be in my relationship with God.  In short, I want to be confident in my salvation.   We are told in Philippians 1:6 we can be confident of God finishing this very work.  And yet I am always amazed at how many people lack confidence in this.  The result of this lack of confidence is we can be tempted to give up, or we can attempt to try and earn our salvation, but this is not possible—it is only through an abiding relationship with Jesus (John 15:1-11).

If we have sincerely trusted in Christ for our salvation (John 14:6), and have acknowledged Him as Lord, then the Holy Spirit will come into our life and we are saved.  We can know the Holy Spirit is in us because Jesus promised He would live in us and work in us (John 14:17).  We can know He is working in us because we will believe Jesus is God’s Son and it is only through Him we can obtain eternal life (John 14:6; 1 John 5:5).

Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? 1 John 5:5 (NKJV)

Another proof the Holy Spirit lives within us is we will begin to live as Christ has directed us (Romans 8:5; Gal. 5:22-23).  Additionally, because we have the Holy Spirit living within us we will now find help in resolving our problems in the times of testing, as He intercedes on our behalf and prays directly to God.

Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God. Romans 8:26-27 (NKJV)

And lastly, we will know we are saved because we will have the Holy Spirit empowering us to serve God and to do His will (Acts. 1:8).

I hope this encourages you to know you are saved, or causes you to seek to have a relationship with Jesus today.  Either way we can be confident in God’s promises, and we have been given a clear understanding as to how we should be being transformed into the likeness of Jesus.  May God bless you and empower you today with a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18).

STUDY QUESTION: According to Philippians 1:6 what can we be confident in once we have made our profession of faith in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you see the signs of the Holy Spirit’s work within your life?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Seek the Lord daily asking Him for a fresh filling of His Holy Spirit so you can be empowered to walk in the Spirit.

MAKE THIS YOUR PRAYER: Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit in my life.  Thank You for equipping me to walk in newness of life and to follow You.  Fill me afresh today with Your Spirit Lord.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
