Our Spiritual DNA
5/12/2014

“I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing." John 15:5 (NKJV)

I’ve always been fascinated with forensic science—more specifically, how it is used to help draw conclusions in solving cases.  Forensic science is very valuable, as it can be used to help in determining guilt or innocence.  It simply reveals evidence to help shape theory into fact.   One of the major tools used in forensic science is DNA, or genetic fingerprinting, as it is often called.

DNA is uniquely distinct in each person; therefore it can be used as very compelling evidence to identify someone.  I am amazed at how God has given each of us an individual DNA code to identify our physical body so there could be no confusion of our uniqueness.  He has given us a unique soul as well—each one fitted with a perfect combination of special features and gifts.

As I thought about this I began to think about how we are told in Ephesians to imitate God (Eph. 5:1).  As we imitate Jesus, I believe others will see Him in us, in our actions, and in our love for one another.

"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” John 13:35 (NKJV)

As disciples of Jesus Christ we are all being transformed into His image (2 Cor 3:18).  So in essence, our Spiritual DNA is being changed to be like His.  Our agape love for others, and our righteous way of living is the fruit of His Spirit (Gal. 5:22), which is a natural byproduct of our knowing and abiding in Him.  I believe when others see these things in us, it gives us a great opportunity to point them to Jesus—the author and finisher of our faith (Heb. 12:2).

STUDY QUESTION:  According to the Scriptures in this devotional, what can we learn with regard to our actions?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Can people clearly see you are a disciple of Jesus by your love for others?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord for His will in every decision and action we choose.  Let’s read our Bible and allow God to transform our lives.

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for Your amazing love and unmerited favor upon our lives.  Thank You for allowing us to flourish and grow in our walk with You.  Help us to love others and to bestow unmerited favor upon them in the same way You have done with us.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
