Having The Perfect Play

“Therefore you shall lay up these words of mine in your heart and in your soul, and bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, and when you rise up.” Deuteronomy 11:18-19 (NKJV)

Have you ever been watching a football game and noticed how the players will be looking to the quarterback between each play, knowing he will be the one leading the team by giving them the next play.  Sometimes a player from the sidelines will run out onto the field and relay the next play, while other times he is allowed to call his own play, because he has studied the playbook, and is familiar with what should be called.  Either way, he will usually be prepared to call the next play.

We can find a similarity to this in our Christian walk as well—let me explain.  When we study the Word of God, we are actually learning God’s divine playbook for the game known as life.  As we read, pray about, and meditate upon God’s Word we are being given great knowledge, and this knowledge is being stored upon the memory chip within the hard-drive of our fleshly computer also known as our brain.  As we ask God for the wisdom to use this knowledge, He is faithful to give it to us liberally (James 1:5).

Now think of the Holy Spirit as the ultimate play caller—He sits with the perfect vantage point, and He will whisper His thoughts (plays) into our head giving us the perfect play for that specific moment and situation.  He takes the Scriptures we have studied and he brings them forth out of our temporary memory files, and reminds us of what we need to do in each situation (cf. John 14:26; 16:13).  We see Jesus telling the first disciples about this as recorded in the Book of John.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you. John 14:26 (NKJV)

When you think about it, we have been given an amazing guarantee by God—each of our plays will be perfect, because we have the Holy Spirit giving us the exact insight as to what we should do, and exactly how and when to do it.  Besides that, He knows the whole playbook of the enemy.

I want to encourage you today—let’s make it a habit to read our playbook (the Bible) daily. Let’s not wait until 4th down and long before we ask Him. Let’s make it a habit of calling upon the Master playmaker for every play, because He will faithfully provide it.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Deuteronomy 11:18-19, what does God tell us to do with His Word?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Have you found yourself in a 4th down and long situation, and not having a play to fall back upon?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:  Let’s study God’s Word, so we can be prepared.  Let’s choose to seek the Lord in “every” situation.  Let’s not wait until 4th down to call upon Him.

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for Your Word.  Thank You for the perfect play when we call upon You.  We seek Your will for our lives this day Lord.  Show us what You want us to know as we read Your Word, and as we meditate upon it.  Continue to lead us in every aspect of our lives, so we may glorify Your Son.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
