Clean Because of The Word

"You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you." John 15:3 (NKJV)

Q:         What does it mean to be “clean because of the word?”

The answer is two-fold.  First, it means we have been regenerated (Saved) because we believed the gospel message (Rom. 1:16).  Secondly, it means we will continued to be pruned and cleaned up by God’s Word, as we read it and apply it to our lives (Heb. 4:12).

For us as followers of Jesus it simply means this is God’s way of continuing our transformation process.  We will never be perfect as long as we are in these earthly vessels (bodies), but as we continue to abide in The Lord, we will continually be transformed to be more like Him.  The completion of this transformation will not fully occur until we are absent from our mortal bodies and are in His presence (cf. 2Cor. 3:18).

Q:         Why is it so important for us to read the bible daily?

As we read our bibles the Holy Spirit chips away the rough edges within our lives, including any bad habits, incorrect thoughts, and actions we have become accustomed to doing.  I like to think of each of us as individual Mt. Rushmore’s—each one of us is being fashioned by the loving hands of the Master Craftsman in accordance with His perfect plan.  Let me explain.

·      There will be times within our lives when God uses dynamite to take off those larger chunks of bad stuff.  We can find it very uncomfortable during these times.  But we need to trust Him, because He knows what He is doing.

·      There will be other times when He uses a jackhammer to take off smaller stuff within our life—stuff hindering our walk and relationship with Him.  It can be those things we desire more than Him, or we have given a greater priority to in our life.

·      Then there will be those times when He uses a small chisel to refine us in areas where we have mostly surrendered our life, but we are still hanging on to stuff because of selfishness, pride, or stubbornness.

Being clean because of the word not only entails things such as, reading the Word, attending bible study, and fellowshipping with other believers, but it also means we need to apply those biblical truths we are studying.  We see this truth plainly stated in Psalm 119.

How can a young man cleanse his way?  By taking heed according to Your word. Psalms 119:9 (NKJV)

Having God’s Word as the foundation of our beliefs, desires, and every aspect of our decision-making process will inevitably cause us to be changed.  And as this happens in our life, we become the witness God intended.  Not just by our words, but more importantly by our actions.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Psalms 119:9, how can we cleanse our way?

PERSONAL INVENTORY:  Are you willing to allow God to clean you?

PERSONAL APPLICATION:  Let’s make a commitment one day at a time to allow God to cleanse us with the water of His Word.  Let’s make a commitment to spend time to prayerfully study each day and allow God’s truth to lead us in every decision.

LET’S PRAY: Father, Thank You for cleaning us up as we study Your word and spend time in Your presence.  Continue Your transformation in our lives.  We love You…In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
