Covered and Transformed by The Water
3/19/2014

A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back. Proverbs 29:11 (NKJV)

I was recently reading an article of the 2011 Tohoku earthquake occurring in Japan.   Directly after the quake, there was great concern for the potential meltdown occurring in the nuclear power plant Fukushima Dai Ichi—the main issue was centered upon an area in one of the reactors where the spent fuel rods were stored.

Normally there would be at least 30-feet of water covering the fuel rods, acting as a barrier so radiation cannot emit into the atmosphere.  But because of the damage suffered during the earthquake, none of the backup safety systems were functioning, and the ocean water—once plentiful and easily accessible to use for cooling purposes—could no longer be transported to the reactors.   With no water, there would be no barrier of protection, and poisonous radiation would be free to enter the atmosphere surrounding the facility—it would cause sickness and death to all who were contaminated.

As I think about this, I can’t help but to draw a parallel to our Christian walk. Let me explain.  In the same way the nuclear plant fuel rods generate power, our human emotional fuel rods can generate a great source of power within our lives.  This power can be used to generate both good, healthy actions and attitudes, or it can be used to generate bad, unhealthy actions and attitudes.

I have found the stabilizing factor to be the “Water” of God’s Word. We see this truth clearly laid out in Ephesians, where husbands are called to wash their wives with the water of God’s Word (Eph. 5:25). And the writer of Psalm 119 knew this as well.

Your word I have hidden in my heart, That I might not sin against You. Psa. 119:11 (NKJV)

So, in essence, as we are reading our bibles daily, we are really covering ourselves with the water of God’s Word.  And much like how the water acts as a barrier, protecting against harmful radioactive material spewing forth from a damaged nuclear facility—the water of God’s Word will act as a barrier to our hearts and minds—helping to keep us from sin and from spewing forth harmful things out of our mouth into the atmosphere around us.

What’s even better though, is His Word actually gets to the heart of the contamination within us and it transforms our hearts into spiritual nuclear reactors—processing His living water to share with others.   Jesus speaks of this living water Himself.

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” John 7:38 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today.  Let’s choose to wash ourselves with the water of God’s Word.  Let’s allow it to act as a barrier against Satan’s filth.  Let’s allow it fill our heart, and allow this life giving water to flow out of our mouth.   Who knows how many lives will be impacted and saved.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 7:38 what promise has Jesus given to those who believe in Him?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you reading your bible daily?

PERSONAL APPLICATION: When we see our emotions becoming bad, let’s seek the covering of the water of God’s Word immediately before our tongues begin to release toxic stuff.    Let’s choose to think upon His Word, His promises, and His will, rather than those things causing us to stumble.

LET'S PRAY: Dear Heavenly Father, Thank You for the Water of Your Word.  Help us to understand and apply what we read each day, and help us to share these things with others as well.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
