Sealed With a Guarantee
2/27/2014

In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. Ephesians 1:13-14 (NKJV)

I think one of the biggest impacts upon our Christian walk happens when we begin to understand the capacity of the Holy Spirit within our life. We received the Holy Spirit when we placed our faith in Jesus as our personal Lord and Savior.   The Scriptures teach us, He lives within our body and is with us every step we take, and is attempting to lead us in all understanding, truth and wisdom (John 16:13). And we are told the Holy Spirit is God’s seal guaranteeing our being purchased by the blood of Jesus (Rom. 8:16; 2 Cor 1:22; Eph. 1:14).

The Apostle Paul had given this message to the Church of Ephesus, letting them know of God’s seal.   Paul knew Ephesus was a major seaport, and this meant most of the goods coming from the eastern part of the world would be coming through their port.  The merchants from Rome would come there to the marketplace and they would make many purchases to send home.  Once they selected their goods, they would seal the package and place hot wax upon it and then press into the hot wax their signet ring, providing a custom seal upon their goods.

Each buyer had a unique individual signet ring to correspond to his identity.  This meant the package bearing their seal was in fact, their property.  When they would return to Rome, and the ship was unloaded and the cargo was being identified, they would see their seal and say, “Hey there, that’s mine, I bought that.” And the corresponding ring on their hand would be proof to the seal upon the wax.

In the same way, God has chosen to use the Holy Spirit as His personal signet ring within our bodies.  When we stand before God and Satan comes to attempt to claim us because of our sin, Jesus will stand up and say, “Hey Father, their mine, I bought and paid for them.”

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, Romans 8:16 (NKJV)

Satan will continually challenge us about our salvation throughout our lives.  He has no power over the believer’s life, but he can be very successful if he can get us to buy into one of his deceiving thoughts planted within our minds to cause us to doubt the security of our salvation.

If you’re a disciple of Jesus Christ, and have placed your faith in Him alone for your salvation, then I want to encourage you to remember you have been bought and paid for by the blood of Christ shed upon Calvary.  God’s seal was placed upon your heart and the Holy Spirit will bear witness to this one day.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what does the seal of the Holy Spirit represent?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you have the seal of the Holy Spirit on your heart?  Have you asked Jesus into your heart and made Him your personal Savior?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION:  Let’s guard ourselves against the enemy’s attempt to rob us God’s promises.  Let’s place our confidence in Jesus, and in the promises and truth of His Word.

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for loving us and purchasing us.  Thank You for giving us the helper—the Holy Spirit.  We pray for your continued leading and empowerment within our lives.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
