Religion or Relationship

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me." John 14:6 (NKJV)

I looked up the word religion on my computer today, and according to Merriam - Webster it can be defined as—

·      The belief in a god or in a group of gods

·      An organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a god or a group of gods

·      An interest, a belief, or an activity that is very important to a person or group

Merriam - Webster went on to give some examples of religion such as—

·      Many people turn to religion for comfort in a time of crisis.

·      There are many religions, such as Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism.

·      Hockey is a religion in Canada.

·      Politics are a religion to him.

·      Where I live, high school football is religion.

·      Food is religion in this house.

For me, I’m not so much into religion, as I am a relationship with God.  I do not foster the value of believing in “a god,” because I have been given an opportunity to know and have a personal relationship with the One true living “God.”

Besides, I don’t want to pattern my life after any particular set of man made religious practices, nor attempt to earn God’s love—I want to pattern my life upon the way Jesus Christ lived—specifically, the way He loved others, and showed mercy and grace.

Simply stated, I want to live my life by having a relationship with Jesus.  The way I see it, this is the very reason Jesus came to earth and took on the form of a human being—to reconcile us through the atonement of our sin so we could have this relationship.  So, if He died to provide this for each of us personally, then why wouldn’t we want to know Him in a personal way?

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven.  Many will say to Me in that day, “Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’And then I will declare to them, “I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ Matthew 7:21-23 NKJV

It’s not enough to know the information about Jesus Christ; we need to have a relationship with Him.  When you think about it it’s no different with any other relationship; without interaction and commitment, it has no value.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 7:21-23, what is the consequence of only knowing of Jesus, and not knowing Him personally?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you know Jesus personally?  Are you spending time prayerfully reading His Word and talking with Him?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s make it a priority to spend time in God’s Word.  Let’s take some time each day to read our Bibles, and to let it’s truth renew our mind and transform our lives.  Let’s get to know Jesus in the way He desires to know us.

LET'S PRAY: Father, we pray that You would open the eyes of those who have been deceived by Satan, that they might see the truth of Your Holy Word. May all who truly want to know You, seek You through prayer and Your Word and may You reveal Your truths to them liberally.  In Jesus’ Precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
