Miracle Within The Mine
11/19/2013

In His hand are the deep places of the earth; The heights of the hills are His also. Psalms 95:4 (NKJV)

I am sure by now most of you reading this devotional are familiar with the miraculous rescue of the 33 miners in Chili who were trapped in the chamber of a collapsed mine for 69 days.  It wasn’t even confirmed if they were alive until 17 days after the initial collapse. Engineers drilled a small borehole about the size of a grapefruit down to the chamber where the men were trapped. Through that small opening they were able to lower a small metal chamber attached to a cable, which they used to send down food, medicines and various things the miners requested such as shaving and grooming supplies.  They also used it for sending and retrieving messages and reports on their condition.

The vast coverage of this event was water cooler conversation amidst the workplace and it filled the cable news channels and the Internet. Wall Street Journal writer Daniel Henninger penned one story catching my eye, titled, “Capitalism Saved the Miners.” Henninger stated, “The profit-innovation dynamic was everywhere at the mine rescue site.”

His story gave credit for the saved lives of the entombed miners to technology evolving from companies and people who are simply attempting to profit from capitalism.  It first pointed to the Center Rock drill bit created by Center Rock Inc., which is a private company in Berlin, Pa. with 74 employees.  Next, credit was divvied out to Schramm Inc. for the drilling rig itself.

Additional items receiving their fair share of credit were a South Korean cell phone containing its own projector; and socks made with copper fiber that consume foot bacteria, and minimize odor and infection.

Henninger succinctly stated these miners would have been dead had this happened 25-years ago.  This was all to point to the claim that technology derived from entrepreneuring individuals seeking profit was responsible for the saved lives of 33 men.

Now I am all for technological advancement in my life and I believe these items were greatly used and were indeed amazing tools to aid and assist the miners and rescuers.   And I would like to personally say thank you to every person and company who helped in this rescue operation.

With that said, I would like to make my own astute point for the saved lives of these men.   It was by Grace – God’s Grace to be specific.  God is the One whom ultimately be given the credit for these men being alive.  God had chosen these men for such a time as this. He had chosen them to be the ones to be sealed within the belly of the earth for 70 days.  They were fully dependent upon His Grace and His Mercy, and He was faithful. Equally, He has chosen those who would be a part of their rescue.

I believe these men were divinely chosen to endure this process, as faith was being discovered for some and refined within the lives of others.  Each one of the miners faced death and was given time to decide who Christ was to them, and who they would choose to be in Him.  And then in God’s perfect timing on the 69th day the tiny capsule they dubbed Fenix (Spanish for Phoenix) began to ferry them up one by one.  Each man emerged from the earth much like a baby being born - alive and changed forever.

God has given these men a platform from which they would give testimony of His divine grace – His unmerited (unearned) favor.  And they were faithful to use this platform, as each man emerged from over a half mile below the earth’s surface.  And with many millions of people throughout the world fixing their eyes upon them, God was given the rightful credit for what transpired.  Each man was wearing a shirt that had been sent down earlier for encouragement.  And the writing upon the shirts told the real story.

The shirts, on the chest, have written the phrase “Gracias Señor! Thank you Lord.” On the back it reads Psalm 95:4, which states, “In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to Him… For Him is the honor and glory."

I believe 34 year-old trapped miner Victor Zamora said it best by his writing he had sent to his pregnant wife and mother while he was still down below.  He said, "I am not being rescued, I am being reborn.”

God is doing miracles everyday.  We don’t have to be buried alive to realize our Lord’s grace upon our life.  We have already been buried in the death of sin, but if we place our faith in Jesus as our Lord and Savior, then we too have been reborn.  All Glory to God!

Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.” John 3:3 (NKJV)

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the verses contained within this devotional with regard to God and our seeing His Kingdom?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Have you been born again through the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ?  Have you accepted His payment upon the cross and confessed Him as your Lord?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s choose to give God the glory for the miracles He has done in our lives.  Let’s choose to share with others how He has delivered us from the bondage of death, and from sin.

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for Your amazing Grace upon our lives.  Thank You for Your love.  Thank You for saving us from spiritual death, and for forgiving us from the sin we have committed because of our faith in Jesus.  Help us to share what You have done in our lives so others may know of Your love and grace.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
