Essentials To Spiritual Growth - Part 4
7/18/2013

"Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you." Matthew 7:7 (NKJV)

We are looking at a five part devotional series titled, Essentials to Spiritual Growth.  In Part 3 we looked at our third essential thing, which is prayer.  In Part 4 we will continue to look at prayer—specifically, we will be looking at two key reasons why we need to be praying to God.  The first reason we should be praying is—

  • Prayer develops our relationship with God.

All relationships need communication or they will fall apart.  Whether it is our marriage, a friendship with someone, or a working relationship, we must communicate to strengthen it.  And it is no different in our relationship with God.  We see the Prophet Zechariah speaking of God's people calling out to Him during tribulation and Him answering their prayers.

I will bring that group through the fire and make them pure.  I will refine them like silver and purify them like gold.  They will call on my name, and I will answer them.  I will say, 'These are my people, and they will say,' 'The LORD is our God.' Zechariah 13:9 (NLT)

The second reason we need to pray is—

  • Jesus told us to Pray

"Keep watch and pray, so that you will not give in to temptation. For the spirit is willing, but the body is weak!" Matthew 26:41 (NLT)

Jesus knows how essential it is for us to pray if we are to live victoriously in our Christian walk, and so He has given us a command to be prepared for the inevitable temptations of Satan and his emissaries by praying.  And we are told to pray continuously (1 Thess. 5:17) and fervently (Jas. 5:16).

We need to always remember something about our praying; we don't pray to move God closer to our will for what we want, as if He is some sort of a genie in a bottle—we pray so we will move closer to God's perfect will for that particular situation.  Prayer isn't getting what we want—it is getting what God wants for us.  God is sovereign and therefore He knows exactly what we need, and He has a perfect plan.  We simply need to come into agreement with His plan, and place our trust in Him (Prov. 3:5-6).  As we pray for His will, and place our trust in Him, we will be given a perfect peace right in the midst of the storm (See Isa 26:3; Phil 4:6-7).

Hey Christian, I want to encourage you to keep praying to God for every detail of your life.

STUDY QUESTION:  What can we learn from the verses in this devotional with respect to praying?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you praying about everything?

PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord in prayer for every aspect of life. Do this before it becomes a crisis, and it will usually alleviate most of our trials brought on by poor choices.

LET’S PRAY:  Father, thank You for teaching us about prayer.  Thank You for allowing us to seek You for every detail of our lives. Help us to know Your will as we seek You.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
