Finding Our Freedom in God

Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. James 4:7 (NKJV)

We’re told in God’s word, if we will submit to God, resist the devil, then he will flee from us. If there is one thing we would all like in our Christian walk, it is probably less temptation from the devil.  After all, he is the ultimate source of testing and temptation (cf. Matt. 4:1-11; Mark. 8:28-34; Luke. 22:31; John. 13:2, 27).

Having this promise from our Lord to ensure Satan’s retreat once we submit to God and resist the devil should be all the motivation we need.   But unfortunately we like to be in control, which is why we struggle with submitting ourselves to God. Here’s the problem as I see it—when we allow our flesh to dictate our actions, we really aren’t in control, and believing we are is buying into the lies of the enemy, and therefore empowering him to control our lives.

Q:         So what exactly does it mean to submit?

This word Submit used here in James 4:7 is translated from the Greek word, hupotasso, hoop-ot-as´-so.   It means to be obedient—to be in subjection.  It’s when I realize that in and of myself, I am helpless, weak, and unable.

When we choose to submit to God we are coming in agreement with Jesus’ truth, that apart from Him we cannot live a victorious Christian life (John 15:5), but through Him we can (Phil. 4:13).  But the devil will lie to us and tempt us to believe otherwise.  The devil’s power is in his lie, and so we need to remember, his lies only have power if we believe them.

In truth, every one of us as Christian men and women will be given the opportunity each and every day, as to whether we will submit to God’s will for our life, or choose to take control and do it our way.  This is why it is so important to take every thought captive and determine whom we are really submitting to.  We’ve been freed from the bondage of death and of sin, but as long as we live in these temporary tents (physical bodies), we will need to submit to God and resist the devil if we are to live in freedom.

STUDY QUESTION: According to James 4:7, what great promise are we given by God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you choosing immediately to submit to God when tempted?

APPLICATION: Let’s choose today whom we will serve, and submit to.  Now let’s take every thought captive and resist the devil’s temptation.

Father, thank You for Your help and guidance in our life.  Thank You for empowering us to choose properly.  Father, please show us the areas in our life where we need to submit to You.  Help us to see these things as You do.  Empower us today.  Fill us with Your Holy Spirit so we have everything needed to make good choices and to follow through on these proper ways.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
