Understanding Spiritual Warfare
3/1/2013

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:12 (NKJV)

There are many Christian believers who either do not believe, or they are willfully ignorant of Spiritual warfare.  But we must acknowledge the reality of it, and realize the devil and his emissaries will do whatever possible to come against, and hinder God’s truth, as outlined in His word.   The fact of the matter is, we are told the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour (1 Pet. 5:8), and that he is the prince of this world (John 14:30), and the ruler of the kingdom of the air (Eph. 2:2).

Even so, we are given great promises with regard to our safety, and how we are to meet these attacks.  We would be wise to understand what God’s word has to say, and to implement these biblical truths into our lives.  For example, even though we know God has given Satan such power in this world temporarily, we also know He has placed limits what Satan is able to do (Job 1:6-10), which includes removing his dominion over those who have put their faith in Jesus (Col. 1:13).

Q:         So what are we to do to defend ourselves against Satan?

We need to understand the battleground of all spiritual warfare will ultimately be in our minds.  Satan knows if he can get us to believe his lies, it will negatively affect our actions, and hinder our success in living in victory.  This is why God has told us we are to submit to His will as outlined in His word.  As we submit to God’s will, we will simultaneously be resisting the devil—this will result in him fleeing (James 4:7).

Q:         So what sort of things must we be submitting to in God’s word?

God’s word is chock-full of His counsel for how we are to live, but here are a few principle truths to guarantee success in Spiritual warfare.

  • We are to be sober and vigilant (1 Pet. 5:8).
  • We are to be strong in the Lord and the power of “His” might (Eph. 6:10), which includes being filled with His Spirit (Eph. 5:18).
  • We are to put on the whole armor of God (Eph. 6:13-17) so we can stand against the wiles of the devil (Eph 6:11).
  • We are to use the mighty weapons of God for pulling down every stronghold of the devil in our lives (2 Cor. 10:4).  These weapons include prayer (Eph. 6:18; James. 5:16), the power of the Holy Spirit (Eph. 5:18), God’s word (2 Tim. 3:16-17; Heb. 4:12), and our mind (2 Cor. 10:5; Phil. 4:8).

Satan would love for us to be willfully ignorant about these truths, so I want to encourage you to take some time to look up these Scriptures and to meditate upon these truths.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Ephesians 6:12, who are we in warfare with?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you committed to submitting to God and resisting the devil?

APPLICATION: Let’s choose to submit to God’s will as outlined within His word, and resist Satan’s temptations through his lies.

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for giving us Your word to guide us in all truth.  Help us to remember it when the enemy attacks us with his lies.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
