Warning Others of Imminent Danger
11/29/2012

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8 (NKJV)

We’ve all seen those National Geographic shows where the big cat predators, such as lions, tigers, leopards and cheetahs, or packs of Hyenas and wolves are looking for something to eat.  And for the rest of the wildlife in their food chain this can be life changing, or even life ending should they be the next meal.  What is fascinating to me is how the various animals all seem to know, and communicate to each other when there is an impending danger of a predator.  For example,

  • The plains zebra will neigh softly, or sound a yelping bark to warn other zebra of a potential danger.
  • Certain species of gazelle’s, such as the Thompson and Grant’s, will warn the herd by flashing their white rumps by lifting their tails, while other species will stomp their front feet on the ground to indicate a disturbance.
  • Ground squirrels will sound an ultrasonic alarm, while the prairie dogs will actually use specific tones of barking to communicate information about imminent threats like hawks, dogs, and even humans.
  • Birds will use call notes to alert other birds of danger, and some species are believed to have different call notes for different types of threats, such as a predator hawk, or a land predator.

All this to say, God has given each species a way to do their part to warn others against imminent danger.  This holds true for us as human beings as well.  We are told Satan walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour, and he does this by enticing his prey into a variety of traps, carefully disguised to tempt each of us.  When we see someone who is about to become entangled in one of the enemy’s traps, we are responsible to warn them of the impending danger.  We can see this biblical principle being given to the Prophet Ezekiel by God in the Old Testament.

When I say to the wicked, “O wicked man, you shall surely die!’ and you do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood I will require at your hand. Ezekiel 33:8 (NKJV)

Warning others isn’t always popular, and there will be many times when our advice and counsel will not be received or applied, but we must still be faithful to sound off the danger alarm in love, because it might just be the difference between life and death (cf. James 5:20).

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn about Satan, and what is our responsibility when we see others in sin?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to be faithful in warning others about Satan, and help guide them to Jesus?

APPLICATION: Let’s be faithful to warn those around us of any impending danger they may be facing.

LET’S PRAY: Father, we thank You for Your protection of us.  Help us to see the potential danger of the enemy, and give us the proper heart and strength to warn those who may be in danger.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
