Prayerfully Giving Thanks
11/22/2012

And we pray this in order that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and may please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God, being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and joyfully giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light. For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, Colossians 1:10-13 (NKJV)

Here it is, another Thanksgiving Holiday!  For many of us it will be a day spent with family and friends, sharing favorite foods, and family traditions. As we make our way to the table to pray there is so much we can be thankful for, such as our relationship with God, Jesus and Holy Spirit, and having the assuredness of spending eternity with them and others who have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior.  There is always much to be thankful for.

One of the things I am very thankful to my Lord for is the ability to talk (pray) with Him about anything and everything.  As a Pastor it brings warmth to my heart when someone tells me they have been praying for me.  I am so thankful to hear this, because I know God is working through others to strengthen me in my Christian walk.

I like the way the Apostle Paul speaks of praying for others continually as well in the book of Colossians.  He shares how he has prayed for them, and then tells them specifically what he has prayed for as well in chapter one.  I would like to share with you this Thanksgiving by giving you a list of things to consider praying for in the lives of those God has laid upon your heart.

Let’s start by asking God to show us a brother or sister in Christ who He would want us to pray for each day.  Then include the following:

  • Be thankful for their faith and changed lives.
  • Ask God to help them know what He wants them to do.
  • Ask God to give them a great desire to read and know His Word.
  • Ask God to give them deep spiritual understanding.
  • Ask God to help them live for Him.
  • Ask God to give them more knowledge of Himself.
  • Ask God to give them strength for endurance.
  • Ask God to fill them with joy, strength, and thankfulness.

Q:         What about those who you know and love, that haven’t made a profession of faith in Jesus yet?  How can we be thankful for this?

First of all we can be thankful God has put them into our lives and has given us the ability and the potential to love them unconditionally.  We can be thankful for our opportunity to be a light to them by testifying of Christ through our actions.  And we can be thankful we have been given the ability to pray for them continually.

As we are thanking God for His many blessings upon our life today, I want to encourage you to ask Him to show you a non-believer who you can pray for.  Then include the following:

  • Be thankful for their being in your life.
  • Ask God to open their eyes to see their sin and this world for what it is.
  • Ask God to open their eyes to see hope in Him alone.
  • Ask God to remove the scales on their eyes so that they can see His truth in His Word.
  • Ask God that He would bring others into their life that know Him, and have a servant’s heart.
  • Ask God to give others and yourself the proper words at the proper time to speak in love and in truth.

Let’s be thankful for the ability to pray directly to God through Jesus.  Let’s choose to use the most powerful weapon we have to leverage changes for eternity.  Let’s use it continually by bringing everything to God in prayer, and giving Him thanks through Christ.  He’s got a perfect plan, and He wants to use each of us in it.  Prayer is when we simply come into alignment with His will for the lives of others, as well as ourself.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 1:10-13, what did Paul pray for, and what did he remind believers to be thankful for?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to pray daily for others, both saved and lost?

APPLICATION: Make a list of people that the Lord has laid upon your heart.  Make a commitment to pray daily for them.  Watch what God does in their lives, it will amaze you…

Father, thank You for everything that You have given to my family and myself.  Thanks for Your mercy, Your love, Your sacrifice, and Your power that You have given to me abundantly.  I praise You this day, and I celebrate all that You have done for my life.  In Jesus precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
