My People

And what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For you are the temple of the living God. As God has said:  “I will dwell in them And walk among them.  I will be their God, And they shall be My people.” 2 Corinthians 6:16 (NKJV)

Well, we are just about a week down the road since our presidential election and it has been interesting to say the least.  The attention has been turned from the two potential candidates who battled for the presidency, and it has been put squarely upon the looming financial crisis we face as a country, as the stock market begins to slide.  Is there anything we can we do as followers of Jesus Christ to help?  I believe there is much we can do, and I would like to look back into the Old Testament to find our answer.

In the book of 2 Chronicles we see the story of another leader of a nation—It was the nation of Israel—a nation of people known as God’s children.  Their leader was Solomon, a man who revered God and who sought to please Him and seek His will rather than trying to lead the people on his own.

Solomon had just finished building the Temple, or “House of the LORD” as it was called.  He knew the temple could never fully contain God, but he also knew it would be the place where God chose to meet with His children.  And so Solomon met there with God and asked him to regard his prayer, and the prayer of His people Israel.  I find it very interesting and applicable to us to read God’s response.  The LORD appeared to Solomon by night, and said to him,

“I have heard your prayer, and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice. When I shut up heaven and there is no rain, or command the locusts to devour the land, or send pestilence among My people, if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually” (2 Chronicles 7:12-16 NKJV)

God was faithful to give a promise to Solomon and to the people who were called by His name.  He would hear their prayer, He would forgive their sin, and He would heal their land if they would simply humble themselves, seek His face in prayer, and choose to turn from their wicked ways.  God had made them a solemn promise to heal them from the very things threatening to consume them and their nation.

God no longer requires man to come to a specific temple to meet with Him, nor does He require we go through a priest.  His Word tells us He has made our very bodies His new Temple where He can now dwell (1 Cor. 3:17; 6:19-20), and because of Jesus we can now come directly to Him in prayer (Heb. 9-10:23).

We can effect great change in this country starting today.  Even if our president doesn’t humble himself, desire to seek God through Jesus (cf. John 14:6), and repent of his wickedness, there is nothing stopping us.  We are God’s children, and the promise is to us—so we must be the ones choosing to be humble, and willing to seek God’s face.  We must be the ones to repent of our wickedness as His Children, and then we can be assured we will find His favor upon our lives and the lives of our families.  We do not need to worship any leader, nor do we belong to any president; we belong to God—we are His people.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn God’s people?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to seek God to for the healing and restoration of this country?  Are you willing to humble yourself, and turn from any sin you have in your life?

APPLICATION: Let’s seek the Lord for the healing of this nation, and for restoration in our own lives.

LET’S PRAY: Father, we confess our sin before You Lord and we acknowledge we have not done what You have asked of us.  We ask for forgiveness for our leaders, and we ask that You would open their eyes to see You clearly and to know Your truth.  We pray that You would heal our nation, and would bring about restoration.  Father, we need You, and we confess that You alone are the One who will heal us and our land.  We ask these things humbly in the name of Jesus, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
