"If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority." John 7:17 (NKJV)

There are many people who refuse to believe in Jesus Christ.  There are some who believe He existed, but they don’t believe He was who He said He was.  There are some who would say He was a good man, or a prophet, but not the Messiah, or Son of God.  But this opinion is without merit because either Jesus was who He said He was, or He was a master deceiver—He cannot be both.  Here are just a few of Jesus’ claims—

  • Jesus claimed to have come down from Heaven (John 3:13; 6:38, 62), something that would get you a straightjacket nowadays.
  • Jesus claimed He had the authority to forgive sins (Matt. 9:6), something only God can do.
  • Jesus claimed to be the Savior of the world, and the “Only” way to God (John 14:6; cf Acts 4:12), something considered very narrow minded and divisive by many today.
  • Jesus claimed to be the source of eternal life (John 3:16; 4:14; 5:39-40)
  • Jesus claimed to have the right to be honored on an equal basis with the Father—God (John 5:23)
  • Jesus claimed to be one with the Father—God (John cf 1:1; 10:30)
  • Jesus claimed to have the power to raise the dead (John 5:28-29; 6:39-40, 44, 54)

All throughout His ministry, people were attempting to get Him to do a miracle.  They would claim if He would do one then they could be sure He was who He claimed to be.  But Jesus didn’t buy into their claims because He knew their hearts—He knew they would never believe, regardless of what they saw.  Instead, Jesus gave a guarantee for every person who would walk this earth; He said, If anyone wills to do His will, he shall know concerning the doctrine, whether it is from God or whether I speak on My own authority” (John 7:17).

What a cool guarantee He gave to those He spoke to.  If they would simply humble themselves and have a heart to seek and do the will of God, then Jesus guaranteed they would know the gospel message He had brought to them was true.  Jesus had already told them He was the bread of life, and that they needed to come to Him so they could have eternal life.  God has always made Himself available to those who really want to find Him.  We see this being spoken of in the Old Testament as well.

But from there you will seek the LORD your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul. Deuteronomy 4:29 (NKJV)

It is the same guarantee from Christ to us today!  If we want to know if Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be, we simply need to come to God and say, "God, I truly want to know You, and I'm willing to do Your will." When a person is honest and truly desires to do God's will, He will give this person the capacity to understand His truth (John 7:17).

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.
