Unchangeable Laws
9/7/2012

“Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.  For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.  Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.” Matthew 5:17-19 (NKJV)

My good friend Dave sent me a link recently containing an article about America’s trust and confidence in the Legislative Branch of the Federal Government.

The Legislative Branch of the United States Government is made up of Congress. There are two parts of Congress; they are the Senate and House of Representatives. The Congress has many jobs. The main job of the Legislative Branch is to write bills that are to possibly become laws. They also have to print and coin money, collect taxes, impeach Presidents and Judges, make sure the Armed Forces have supplies, make treaties, and declare war.

In this particular article they were reviewing statistics of how America’s confidence has risen and fallen over the last 40 years since it has been tracked.  At its high it was 72%, which meant roughly 7 out of every 10 Americans had confidence in those who would be making laws for all to abide by.  It was interesting to see how it would go slightly up and down through the years, but very revealing to see how it plummeted like never before.  In 2006 American confidence was at 62% but now it is at a staggering 31%.

It is a telling statistic for sure to know only 31% of 300 million people have confidence in the ones who are legislating the laws and are setting the path we will be governed by in this country.

As I thought about this I couldn’t help but think how God gave His children perfect laws to live and abide by.  I wondered if we would simply submit to His laws and put our confidence in Him alone how much better would we be?  How different would our country look, and what kind of impact would we be making on this world for Jesus?

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things.  Let’s choose to put our confidence in God alone.  Let’s pray for our leaders within this country and ask God to open their eyes so they can see and know Jesus, and to give them the ability and heart to make good God-honoring decisions.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 5:17-19 what impact will there be for those who submit to God’s laws?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to place your confidence and trust in God alone?

APPLICATION: Let’s faithfully pray each day for our leaders and continue to trust God and keep our minds fixed upon the Lord, because He has promised a perfect peace for those who do (Isa. 26:3).

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for giving us Your laws to govern our lives.  Help us to remember them and empower us to abide in them all the days of our life.  We trust in You and we love You.  Father, we pray for every person in leadership—open their eyes so they can see things in the way You do and so they may desire to make great choices.  Give our leaders great wisdom and discernment.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
