Standing Forever
9/4/2012

The grass withers, the flower fades, But the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV)

I love durable, well-built  tools.  It can be anything from a 28-oz. claw hammer, or a beefy shovel to a heavy-duty wheelbarrow, or a great pair of leather gloves—it doesn’t matter as long as it is durable, tough, and can continue to last to do many jobs.  I have pretty much had a pick up truck most of my life because of the usefulness and practicality they bring. Between working on the house, taking my motorcycle out to ride, and using it for all sorts of work stuff, it just wouldn’t make sense not to have something with a bed to haul stuff around.

My current truck is a Chevy 2500HD and it is more truck than I truly need, but it is nice to know I have enough truck to get the job done.  I’ve had Ford trucks as well, and to tell you the truth they are both pretty well-built tough vehicles.  Both manufactures work very hard at promoting their pick up trucks durability with Chevrolet using a tag line, "Most Dependable, Longest-Lasting Trucks on the Road," and Ford laying claim to “having the greatest number of trucks still on the road with greater than 250,000 miles on the odometer.”

I have to admit it’s nice to see some automobile manufacturers working hard at making some products to last longer than it takes to pay them off.  Over my years on this earth I have seen an incredible change in how things are made.  It seems for decades durability has been sliding down the list.

When it comes to durability there is nothing in the running to rival God’s Word. God has built His Word to last longer than any other thing we will touch or see in our lives.   Jesus boldly told His disciples, “Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away” (Matt. 24:35).   To really grasp this truth should cause us to fully understand the magnitude of its worth.

…For You have magnified Your word above all Your name. Psalms 138:2 (NKJV)

Satan will do whatever he can to keep us distracted or too busy to open up our Bibles.  Satan knows if he can keep us from making it a priority to read, study, and pray about God’s Word then he can keep us from knowing what God wants us to know; he can keep us from understanding what God wants us to believe, and he can keep us from acting upon God’s revelation and guidance for our lives.

The fact is every one of us who has a desire to truly follow Jesus should have a great desire to live by His Word—this will always separate us from the world, and it will set us apart for His service.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let’s find out what God wants to talk about with us.  Let’s open our Bibles and prayerfully read the words God has ordained to stand forever.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, what can we learn about the importance of God’s Word?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you magnify God’s Word about everything else in your life?

APPLICATION: Let’s give God’s Word the greatest respect and allow Him to give us greater wisdom by prayerfully reading it each and every day.

LET’S PRAY: Father, thank You for giving us Your Word to guide, lead, and correct us.  Help us to understand and apply it as we read each day.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
