Slow To Complain - Quick To Praise

Make a joyful shout to God, all the earth! Sing out the honor of His name; Make His praise glorious. Say to God, “How awesome are Your works! Psalms 66:1-3 (NKJV)

I recently received an email from a friend of mine.  He had sent me over a link to look at a blog about some product on the website.  Along with link he had written a statement that caught my eye—he said, “Negative people complain and happy people are quiet unless a MAJOR problem arises.”  As I thought about this I found myself having to agree.  All too often we can be fast to complain about something or someone, and yet when it comes to saying, “Thank you,” or “job well done” or even simply acknowledging how much we value them we can suddenly become quiet—too quiet actually.

I think the reason this happens is that we tend to be “self-centered, and self-focused” by nature.  We are constantly looking at how something is working out for us, and therefore we are always looking at how everything affects us.  For example, if a waitress doesn’t treat or serve us with the attitude or effort we feel we deserve we can tend to be critical in our thoughts and even our speech.  But there are many times when others have done something nice for us and we choose to hold back a simple complement or deserving praise.

As I thought about this I immediately thought about how this can transpire in our prayer life with God as well.  We can often find ourselves complaining to God about the things happening to us in our businesses, relationships, and many other areas of our lives—complaining about what we don’t have, rather than simply taking the time to thank and praise Him for all the provisions, protection, and amazing blessings He has given us.

I think it is important for us to take time throughout our day to look around and acknowledge the many blessings God has given to us.  I think we need to look outside at the amazing beauty of nature and animal life and then remember God made it for us and gave us dominion over it (Gen 1:28-29).  Perhaps we should stop more frequently and really reflect upon what Jesus has done for us, and simply say, "thank you," and praise His name.  Who knows?  Someone just might be listening, and realize these blessings too.

Oh, give thanks to the LORD!  Call upon His name;  Make known His deeds among the peoples! 1 Chronicles 16:8 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things.  Let’s take every chance possible to choose to look around and be thankful for the many blessings God has given unto us.  Let’s be slow to complain and quick to praise.  God has given us much indeed.  Praise Jesus!

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained within this devotional, how can we show our heart of gratitude towards God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you continually praising God and making His deeds known among others?

APPLICATION: Let’s start every prayer by praising God for His many blessings, before we ask Him for any more.

LET’S PRAY: Father, we thank You for Your many blessings upon our lives.  We acknowledge all provision is from You and we want to say, “Thank You!”  Help us to see the many blessings we have taken for granted.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
