Standing The Test of Time
8/1/2012

“The grass withers, the flower fades,  But the word of our God stands forever.” Isaiah 40:8 (NKJV)

I just recently finished watching this year's Tour De France—a bicycle race of over 2000-miles in length taking over 20 days to complete.  I have been watching this race for about 30 years now, and I never tire of it.  One of the things I find very interesting in addition to the bicycle competition is the history of old buildings and castles included in the television coverage.  There is something very intriguing about these old structures as they have withstood the test of time.  Many of them have been renovated over the last few hundred years while others are all but destroyed due to many factors, allowing only a remnant of the original foundation and walls remain.

For something to stand the test of time is not an easy feat, and in many cases it takes much work.  Take Coca-Cola for instance – from 1886 to 2005 the renowned brand has had 168 different taglines to keep their brand in the forefront of the beverage industry, while hundreds of other companies have since faded and ceased to be in business.

The greatest example of something standing the test of time is God’s Word.   Divinely inspired and written by approximately 40 different authors over a period of 1500 years, it is a collection of 66 separate books, but in actuality it is one book.  The Bible contains everything God wants us to know about whom He is, as well as who we are.  God has preserved His Word throughout history and He has promised it will stand forever.  Jesus had even stated it would last even when everything else is long gone.

"Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away." Matthew 24:35 (NKJV)

There have been many men who have taken these promises to heart, as some have placed their faith in God and His Word, while others have challenged and attacked them both.  There have been Kings, evil dictators and even so called religious men who have attempted to destroy the Bible by many means.  Some have argued against it, while others have mocked it; some have attempted to collect all the Bibles from the people and burn them, while others have went so far as to kill those in possession of a Bible.  And yet throughout all of this the Bible has thrived, and it will for all time.

When I think about this I am strengthened in my faith in my Lord to be faithful, even when I may falter at times.  It is encouraging to know we can count on something to stand firm and be true no matter how crazy and unstable our world becomes.   Praise God for His faithfulness.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let’s pick up our Bible’s and prayerfully read them today.  Let’s allow God’s Word to wash us and guide our lives.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures contained in this devotional, what can we learn about God’s Word?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to allow God’s Word to guide your life?

APPLICATION: Let’s start each day by reading God’s Word, and then let us continue to meditate upon it, and apply it to our lives.

LET’S PRAY:  Father, thank You for giving us Your Word to guide our lives.  Help us to understand and apply it as we prayerfully read it today.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
