Led By The Spirit

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God. Romans 8:14 (NKJV)

Have you ever really stopped and considered what motivated you?  Is there something driving you to do the things you are doing, or the things you are aspiring to do, or is there something leading you.  I like to look at this within my own life, because I find I would always rather be led than driven.  Driven makes me think of someone being forced to do something they would not have otherwise done.  Whereas when I think of being led, I am often reminded of sheep who willingly desire to follow their shepherd.

In the Book of Romans we are told, “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God” (Rom. 8:14).  Notice how it doesn’t say, “For as many as attend church, or read their Bibles, these are the sons of God.”  We are clearly told those who are “Led by the Spirit of God,” are the ones who are children of God.  This implies our following the Spirit’s leading.  It implies our having an abiding relationship with Jesus and our abiding in His Word (John 15:1-11).

Q:         How are we led by the Spirit of God?

I believe The Spirit of God illuminates the Scriptures, as we are faithful to read, study, pray, and meditate upon it.  As we genuinely seek the will of our Lord through the Scriptures, He will allow The Holy Spirit provide interpretation so we can apply it to our lives (John 14:26).  Another way the Spirit of God leads us is by His empowering us to obey His Word.

We must understand God does not force His will upon our lives. Even as born again believers we will almost inevitably fall back into sin and the desires of this world when our focus turns from God and His Word to the things of this world.  For this reason we must be steadfast in staying focused on our Great Shepherd—Jesus.

If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.  Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. Colossians 3:1-3 (NKJV)

The Spirit of God is here as a gift from God to lead us into repentance, into truth, into holiness and into receiving and sharing His love and mercy.  The Spirit of God is here to guide us—even when we do not understand—but choose to walk in faith.  If we are willing to genuinely surrender our desires, wills, and lives unto our Lord, then we will find ourselves having a heart to submit to His ways and plans for our lives.  When this happens we will begin to see the effects of the power of The Spirit of God in our lives as we begin to have victory over sin, and the fruit of the Spirit (Gal. 5:22).

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let’s choose to submit and surrender our lives to God today.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Colossians 3:1-3, what should we, as Christians, be setting our minds upon?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is your mind fixed upon the Lord, and the things above?

APPLICATION: Let’s choose to fix our minds upon the things of God today and submit to His plan for our lives.  Let’s choose to trust Him completely and give the reigns back over to Him.

Let’s pray…

Father, thank You for leading us to You through The Holy Spirit.  Thank You for guiding us in every aspect of our lives today.  Help us to discern Your Word today and empower us to walk in truth.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
