Making A Proper Impact

“You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.  “You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.  Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.  Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” Matthew 5:13-16 (NKJV)

Jesus clearly taught His disciples they were to make an impact on those they came in contact with.  They were told they were “Salt” and “light.”  Jesus went on to let them know if they were not going to make an impact then they were “good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.”  Ultimately, we will make an impact for God upon our world, or we will make an impact for Satan—there is no middle ground here.

I recently read an AUTOWEEK magazine, and upon the cover was a picture of a man by the name of Carroll Shelby.  Carroll was an icon in the auto industry and was very well known for his personal design of models such as the Shelby AC Cobra, and Shelby Mustang, GT-40, and Dodge Viper, just to name a few.  Needless to say he made a significant impact upon the muscle car world.

I don’t know Carroll personally, and I don’t know if he knew the Lord or not.  But as I looked at the cover of the magazine, I got a picture of how the auto world viewed this man.  The cover had a picture of him standing by some of his cars and the bullet points read,

  • Carroll Shelby, January 11, 1923 – May 10, 2012
  • Chicken Farmer
  • Hell-Raiser
  • Race Car Driver
  • Entrepreneur
  • American Icon
  • Truly, the most interesting man in the world

As I read this list describing this man’s life, I thought about how sad it was to read.  Cars, chickens, and raising hell were the highlights noted by this magazine.  Again, I don’t know Carroll, nor will I judge his life, but it did make me think about what would be written about my life if I were to die today.  Would the bullet points bring glory to the things God has done through me—drawing others to want to know Him, or would they be shallow and temporary things I had accomplished?

I want to encourage you to mediate upon these things today.  Let’s choose to impact our world for kingdom purposes.  Let’s choose to impact our world so others might know Jesus and live eternally.  Let’s decide to impact our families, friends, co-workers, and everyone who comes into our presence for God.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 5:13-16 what could we learn about what Jesus expects of us as His followers?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you impacting this world for Jesus?

APPLICATION: Let’s choose to carefully think through our involvement of the activities we are tempted to be a part of, and discard anything that would impact this world for Satan.

Let’s Pray…

Father, we thank You for reminding us of how we can either be vessels of honor or of dishonor.  Help us to make an impact upon this world for You.  Help us to see things clearly as You do so we can make wise decisions.  In Jesus’ precious name, amen…

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
