Getting Rid of The Weight
6/8/2012

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)

Have you ever gone hiking with a backpack strapped to your torso?  I have, and it can become pretty heavy the longer you carry it.  I suppose this applies to pretty much anything of any real weight.  I remember once hiking down to the bottom of the Grand Canyon with my wife and two daughters.  We all walked in, but I ended up carrying our youngest one out.

There eventually comes a time where we will shed the weight we are carrying and the difference is amazing—it is almost as if you feel lighter and stronger immediately.  We are exhorted in Hebrews 12:1 to lay aside, or to “throw off” every weight that hinders us…and to run with endurance the race that is set before us.  The writer of Hebrews knew his audience would relate to these words, because athletes carried nothing with them when they were in a race, and so we are encouraged to travel light in our lifestyles.

Q:         What are the things weighing us down in our Christian walk?

Truth is, it can be just about anything.  Many times it isn’t so much as something being wrong, but that we are consumed with it so much we find we are not putting our best foot forward.  When we find this happening we need to identify with what is happening and then discard these things within our lives—we are to get rid of the weight.

Jesus knew this would happen to all of us, and so He extended a personal invitation to every one of us who eventually find they are heavy laden with weight; the weight of trying to be everything others expect of us.

“Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today. Let’s seek the Lord and ask Him to show us anything we have allowed to consume us to the point of ensnaring us.  Let’s get rid of the heavy laden weight.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Matthew 11:28-30 what offer does Jesus give to us, and what does His offer include?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there something in your life you have allowed to ensnare you and consume your best resources?

APPLICATION: Let’s seek God to ask Him if there are things within our lives ensnaring us.

Let’s Pray…

Father, thank You for sharing Your heart with us today.  Help us to identify with anything ensnaring to us.  Help us to discard these things.  In Jesus Precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
