It's Alive!

It's Alive!
The Power To Change Lives

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 (NKJV)

I recently received an email from our good friends Vern and Teresa who live up in Idaho.  Teresa shared how the home they had just moved into has no cable and limited television channels to choose from.  She then shared this story with me.

"I kept running across this station where a guy reads from the King James Version in a mono tone voice and the words go across the screen so you can read along. I always just skipped past it as fast as I could because of his monotone voice and corny old music and such.  One evening Vern was asleep on the couch with the remote in his hand.  He had "changed" the channel in his sleep and it fell on that station.  I was sitting in the chair with my feet up on the ottoman covered in a blanket and I was too tired to get up, pry the remote from his hand, and change the channel so I just sat there.  The guy was reading from Revelation and I started following along with him.  The next thing I knew I was totally into it.  The music, the monotone voice, and all didn't bug me because God's Word had come alive and captured my attention.  Revelation was thrilling me more than any thing the world had to offer on TV, even with all the vials poured out and the plagues in the last days.  I was amazed!"

She went on to say, "I guess the point of my stories is that God's Word is so alive.  It's not just words on a page and even read in a monotone voice in an older "language" with accompanying old music.  It still stirs me and captures my attention even when I've heard the words before.  God is so good to give us such an amazing gift."

As I read this email I felt compelled to put it into a devotional, because I don't think I could have written or stated it any better.  God's Word is alive, and it will change our heart and our life if we will listen to it, meditate upon it, and apply its wisdom.  You see, its not about the music at our church, the pitch of the pastor's voice, or his funny stories.  Those things are fine and they can add to the message, but the power will always be in God's Word.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon this today.  Let's choose to remember God will always be faithful to feed, strengthen and transform us through His Word if we will simply be faithful to give Him our time and attention.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Hebrews 4:12 what can we learn about the Word of God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to spend time with God each day to prayerfully read His Word?

APPLICATION: Let's take time each day to prayerfully read God's Word and to meditate upon what we have read so we can apply it to our lives.

Let's Pray…

Thank You Father, for Your Word.  Thank You for feeding us and strengthening us as we rightly divide it.  Thank You for transforming us to be more like Jesus.  Help us to understand and apply it to our lives today.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
