Rendering To God

Rendering To God

"Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and to God the things that are God's." Matthew 22:19-21 (NKJV)

I would imagine many people across the nation gave a collective sigh of relief as the tax deadline came and went on April 15th.  For many, paying taxes can be very hard for them to do, and it can even conjure up feelings of anxiety, bitterness, and anger.  It seems to be a difficult thing to take one's hard earned money and give it to the government, especially when we might not agree with how it is being spent.

As much as we would like to think of the money we possess as ours, it is in fact all God's—we have simply been given stewardship of it.  Jesus knew this would rock some of us so He had these Pharisees identify whose face was engraved upon the currency.  When they responded, Caesar, he told them, "Render therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesars..."  Jesus knew we would have a problem with rendering our money to Caesar, but He did not stop there—He then said, "and to God the things that are God's."

Jesus had just told the Pharisees to look at the coins within their hands and to acknowledge whose image was stamped into it—it was Caesar's image.  In like manner we have been made in the image of God, and once we give our life to Jesus the Holy Spirit places a divine insignia—a royal seal upon our life signifying we belong to God (2 Cor. 1:22).

Q:    What did Jesus mean when He said we were to render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's and to God the things that are God's?

Jesus was telling us we should pay our taxes, regardless what style of government is over us, even if they are pagan, idolatrous or even blasphemous.  We do this because the governing authority is God's agent, not because we agree or respect the person in office.  Even so, we should never give any government leader, or any man for that matter, our worship—this belongs to God alone.

Give unto the LORD the glory due to His name; Worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness. Psalms 29:2 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let's choose to render unto our government leaders what God has asked of us (Rom. 13:5-7), and let us not do it begrudgingly or out of necessity, but with a cheerful heart, as unto God.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional, what should we be giving unto our Lord?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you giving the Lord the glory due to His name?

APPLICATION: Let's give the best of what we have each and every day unto our Lord as an act of worship.

Let's Pray…

Father, thank You for showing us how to live righteously.  Father we know all provision is from You, and we know You will supply our needs.  Help us to do what is righteous and honoring unto Your Holy Name.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
