Spring Cleaning

Create in me a clean heart, O God, And renew a steadfast spirit within me. Psalms 51:10 (NKJV)

Have you ever seen one of those movies scenes where the parents are away for the weekend and one of the kids decides on having a party?  I'm sure you have, and the scene usually goes something like this.  The call goes out from the teen living at home and a bunch of friends are invited over and the word gets out and more people begin to show up. The family home is soon being swept up in chaos and everything is being trashed.

The next scene has the phone ringing and the parents are telling Jr. something has come up and they will be home in 45 minutes.  The 5-alarm fire bell rings in the head of the child at the thought of dad seeing him and his friends in all of his glory.  A mad dash ensues and the house is rapidly put back in order and a virtual spring-cleaning has occurred.  Of course, there is always one thing missed in the cleaning process and then a face-to-face meeting with dad ensues.

I know of many people who are doing this very thing in their Christian walk.  The thought being "Dad" (God) is not around and so there is time to play around before He gets home.  I have spoken with people who believe they're okay with living this way and they believe they can always do a fast spring-cleaning (confession) before Jesus comes back and finds them living in sin. There are those who would believe God doesn't see our sin once we have been saved, but this is not true.

There are a few problems with this type of thinking.  First of all, God is omniscient (All-Knowing) and Omni-present (Present everywhere) so He sees and knows everything. Secondly, we are told for whom the Lord loves, He chastens (Heb. 12:6).  How can God chasten us for our sinful acts if He cannot see it?  Let's be clear, God sees everything perfectly and He lives in us (John 14:16,17) to convict us of our sin to guide us back to His will.

Thankfully Jesus paid for our sin upon the cross and God is faithful to forgive us for our trespasses as we confess Jesus as our Lord and believe in Him.  We are now new creations in Christ and we are to walk in newness of life (Rom. 6:4).  Now because we are robed in the righteousness of Christ we are told God has chosen to remember our sins no more (Heb. 8:8-13), and our sins will be removed from us as far as the east is from the west (Ps. 103:11-12).  Our responsibility is to continually acknowledge (confess) when our actions do not align with His will and to repent (turn) from them (Luke 13:3; Acts 3:19).

Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us… Hebrews 12:1 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let's encourage those around us not to wait to do a spring-cleaning within their lives.  Let's choose to never become so comfortable with sin we would seek to take God's amazing grace for granted.

STUDY QUESTION: According to Ps. 51:10 what was David's desire?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you desire to have a pure heart, knowing it will lead to pure actions honoring to God?

APPLICATION: Let's make it our hearts desire to live in a way honoring to God.  Let's choose to never be so comfortable living in sin we would take God's amazing grace for granted.

Let's pray…

Father, thank You for Your amazing grace and for forgiving us of our sin.  Father, thank You for choosing not to remember our sin with respect to any due judgment.  We thank You Jesus for dying for us and providing reconciliation.  Father, create in us a pure heart today so we may honor and live for You all the days of our lives.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
