Dump the Stuff!

Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD your God which He has given you. Deuteronomy 16:17 (NKJV)

Have you every looked around your house and realized how much stuff you have accumulated?  It blows my mind some times to see all the things collected over the years.  It seems to me like a small portion of what I have is being used on somewhat of a regular basis, but there seems to be a large amount of stuff that is not.

I was talking with a good friend the other day about posting some stuff for me on Craigslist. I have come to the conclusion of making the decision to get rid of the stuff I haven't used in years, or don't plan on using.  The way I see it, I can get rid of this stuff now, put some cash in my pocket, and if I need it again in a year or two, then I can find another used one for sale then.  Heck, I could probably get a smaller house if I got rid of this stuff.

This made me think about the principle of distribution.  Most warehouses are used for the purpose of storing the product contained inside for a short time before it is loaded up and transferred to the location where the end user will purchase it.  The warehouse isn't the final destination; the product is simply kept there temporarily to direct it to where it is needed (Eph. 4:28).

As I thought about this, I couldn't help but wonder if every one of us as Christian men and women would apply this same philosophy with everything God has given to us.  Since everything we have is from God, and actually belongs to Him, then we should be looking for ways of keeping this stuff moving out of our warehouses and into being used for Kingdom purposes.

Here's my point—since God has given us everything we have, then we should be willing to give to others as if we were giving away God's stuff, rather than taking away from what we have.  Jesus said, "Give, and it will be given to you: good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over will be put into your bosom. For with the same measure that you use, it will be measured back to you" (Luke 6:38).  In other words, give like you are a distributor for Christ, not a collector for men.

This principle doesn't just apply to our physical possessions either—it very much applies to the knowledge, wisdom and love our Lord has bestowed upon us through His Word.  We need to be sharing what we are learning so others will be blessed by it as well.  One more thing we must remember as we give according to the Lord's leading, we must give with a proper heart—cheerfully, as if we are giving it unto the Lord.

So let each one give as he purposes in his heart, not grudgingly or of necessity; for God loves a cheerful giver. 2 Corinthians 9:7 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you today to meditate upon these things today.  Let's purpose within our hearts to give cheerfully.  Let's choose to be distributors of God's resources.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn from the Scriptures contained within this devotional with regards to sharing what we have been given?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to share what you have with others as the Lord leads you?

APPLICATION: Let's ask God to use us to share with others in need.  What a great way to show the love of Christ.

Let's Pray…

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for being such a gracious giver.  Thank You for every good gift You have given unto us Lord.  Help us to see clearly when we are to share what we have with others Lord. In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
