Do I Care?

Do I Care?

"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another." John 13:35 (NKJV)

Have you ever found yourself in a conversation where you inquired about someone else because you were concerned about him or her?  It may have been because you had previous knowledge of the trials they had endured.  Such was the case with Nehemiah, the Prophet of God.  It had been years since the exiles had returned to their home in Jerusalem, and he wanted to know how they were doing, and so when he saw some of his fellow countrymen coming down the road, he eagerly seeks to find out how they are.  Nehemiah was told this,

"The survivors who are left from the captivity in the province are there in great distress and reproach. The wall of Jerusalem is also broken down, and its gates are burned with fire." Nehemiah 1:3 (NKJV)

When Nehemiah was told this he sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; he was fasting and praying before God (Jer. 1:4).

I think there is a lot we can learn from this story and example of Nehemiah.  Nehemiah cared enough to ask about others.  When he found out their poor condition it grieved him greatly.  He mourned for them and then fasted; turning to God in prayer.  Eventually he returned to Jerusalem and led Israel in rebuilding.  Now the job to rebuild was overwhelming, but Nehemiah simply sought the Lord and was faithful to allow God to use him in a mighty way.

Nehemiah's great accomplishments all started because he first cared for others.   He cared for those who were in great need and distress, both spiritually and physically.  And so it will be for you and I—if we are to be used mightily by God it must start within our hearts.  We must ask ourselves, "Do I care?"

Just because we care does not ensure we will not face hardships in helping others, nor will it ensure we easily overcome the obstacles before us.   There will be times when we will be called out to help others and it will seem impossible and even overwhelming.   But if we have the heart of Jesus then we will be willing to simply take one step at a time, and we will allow God to do His work through us.

Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit, Says the LORD of hosts. Zechariah 4:6 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let's choose to care about those around us.  Let's seek the Lord in prayer for our part in helping them, both physically and spiritually.  Let's allow God to use us and to do mighty works through us.

STUDY QUESTION: According to John 13:35 how can we know by one's actions if they are a follower of Jesus?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Do you love others enough to care and to do whatever is needed to live Christ before them?

APPLICATION: Let's choose to be aware of the people God has placed around us.  Let's ask the Lord what part we would have in their lives.

Let's Pray…

Father, thank You for Your Word to guide and lead us in all understanding.  Father, show us those people in our life we need to inquire about, and show us our part to help them.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
