A Time To Be Quiet
Just Listen and Obey

Now Joshua had commanded the people, saying, "You shall not shout or make any noise with your voice, nor shall a word proceed out of your mouth, until the day I say to you, 'Shout!' Then you shall shout." Joshua 6:10 (NKJV)

Have you ever had so much going on in your life you didn't know whether you were coming or going?  It could have been because of work, or because of the many things you had on your plate at the time, but it just left you feeling a little disoriented and confused as to what you should be doing, or even if you should be doing it.

When I think about this type of situation it makes me think about Joshua as he led the Israelites across the Jordan River and into the Promised Land.  The people were on edge and a bit nervous to be sure, as they were about to come against a fortified city by the name of Jericho.

I think we can glean some very practical applications for our lives as Christian men and women.  The first thing we can see in the story is God was in control—He knew the outcome before anything ever started.  The second thing is God provided a spiritual leader in Joshua to guide and lead them.  The third thing we can glean from this story is God's leader gave them the word and will of God—God had told Joshua exactly what to do and when to do it; now Joshua was to pass on to the people what God had given him.

The fourth and probably most important thing we can see in this story is after Joshua passed on the Lord's commands he instructed the people to be quiet and do as I tell you to (Josh. 6:10).

I think we have been given the perfect recipe of success in our lives right here.

We need to always remember God is in control, no matter what we may be facing.  God has given us spiritual leaders in pastors, and they are to teach and instruct us in His Word—they are to guide and lead us in His ways.  And last, but not least, we should probably talk a little less and we should try to be better listeners and choose to submit to what God is telling us to do and simply be obedient.  After all, God has always given His children a promise of great blessings if we would just stay in and obey His Word.

This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let's choose to be better listeners, and to be obedient in following what we know to be righteous.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we glean from the scriptures within this devotional with respect to our listening and obeying God's Word?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to put God's Word above every personal feeling and be obedient to it?

APPLICATION: Let's choose to meditate upon God's Word day and night, and to be obedient to what He has asked us to do.

Let's Pray…

Father, thank You for Your Word to guide us and lead us in all understanding.  Thank You for Your amazing promises of great blessings.  Help us to be obedient to those who You have placed in authority and help us to be better listeners Lord.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
