Worship In Spirit and Truth

Worship In Spirit and Truth

"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth. John 4:24 (NKJV)

What would you think of someone who was praising you, but they weren't really sincere about what they were saying?  Would you look at them as if they were a hypocrite?  Would you find it sad if someone's actions were made out to be really sincere but you knew their heart really didn't line up with his or her actions?

Sadly, I believe there are many people who attend church and do just this.  They are faithful to come and attend the service and they may even be singing the songs or appear to be worshiping God but their hearts are far removed from their external acts of worship. We are told how to worship God within His Word; we are to worship Him in "Spirit" and in "Truth" (John 4:24).

Q:    What does it mean to worship God in Spirit and Truth?

Well, to worship God in Spirit simply means we are to worship Him from our heart.  This is because any true worship of God can never be based or centered upon any particular external religious activities.  Honest and pure worship originates in our inner spirit within our hearts.

To worship God in Truth simply means we are to worship Him in the whole counsel of His Word.  This means we will not pick and choose certain parts of the Bible, but instead we will choose to live in obedience to every part of it.  Every single thing we do can be an act of worship unto our Lord, so every action should be carefully weighed out and brought into alignment with His will as shown within the Scriptures (1 Cor. 10:31).

The verb Worship in Hebrew means to fall down in submission, to surrender.  Our very life is to be an act of worship and therefore requires we repent (turn from) anything we know to be wrong according to God's Word. This does not mean we will live a perfect life and never stumble or sin; only Jesus did this.  It simply means our heart is committed to following Jesus and to abide in His Word. If we willfully choose to continue to live in rebellion to what we know to be righteous and true then we must understand this is not true worship.  Before we can be a warrior of God we must be a worshiper of God. When we worship the Lord in truth and spirit it has the ability to move us to obedience.

And so, dear brothers and sisters, I plead with you to give your bodies to God because of all he has done for you. Let them be a living and holy sacrifice—the kind he will find acceptable. This is truly the way to worship him. Romans 12:1 (NLT)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let's make it our hearts desire to worship our Lord in spirit and in truth.  Let's choose to repent of anything we know to be wrong.  Let's choose to be a living and Holy sacrifice to our Lord.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional what can we learn about true worship of God?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to worship the Lord in spirit and in truth?

APPLICATION: Let's choose to make every action of ours an act of worship unto the Lord.

Let's pray…

Father, thank You for Your Word to guide us in truth.  Help us to see any area in our lives where we need to repent and turn to You.  Give us the strength needed to walk in newness of life.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
