Drastic Measures

Drastic Measures

Israel has sinned, and they have also transgressed My covenant which I commanded them. For they have even taken some of the accursed things, and have both stolen and deceived; and they have also put it among their own stuff. Joshua 7:11 (NKJV)

I have seen many families destroyed because of the sin.  I don't think many people think about the real consequences of their sin when they are in the midst of being tempted, because they are just too focused on what is tempting them.  Unfortunately a person's sin has a way of mocking them and it can continue to cause damage throughout their lives and the lives of those around them as well.

In the book of Exodus there is a story of a man named Achan.  Achan decided to keep some of the spoils from the battle of Jericho, despite God's command not to do this.  To be specific Achan was enticed by a garment, two hundred shekels of silver and a wedge of gold weighing an additional 50 shekels.

Because of Achan's sin Israel lost their next battle, as God decided to withdraw His favor, protection and blessings.  The result of Achan's sin had already begun to take its toll, as many lives were lost in the battle.  It didn't stop there either, as Joshua was commanded to take Achan and his entire family out of the camp and they were stoned to death.  God would not bless them until they had exercised His judgment and taken the objects of sin and removed them from the midst of His people.

Get up, sanctify the people, and say, Sanctify yourselves for tomorrow, because thus says the LORD God of Israel: There is an accursed thing in your midst, O Israel; you cannot stand before your enemies until you take away the accursed thing from among you. Joshua 7:13 (NKJV)

We can learn much from this needless tragedy.  When we disobey our Lord and instead choose to insist on doing what we know to be wrong we will not be blessed, and it can cost us dearly.  Our family will be affected as well.

Q:    How should this story affect us today?

It should cause us to understand the gravity and potential consequences of our sin.  We should remove anything from our midst we know to be wrong.

Fools mock at sin, But among the upright there is favor. Proverbs 14:9 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things today.  Let's make it our hearts desire to walk in newness of life.  Let's choose to inspect our lives and to willingly remove anything causing us or others to stumble in their Christian walk; even if it takes drastic measures.

STUDY QUESTION: What can we learn about our sin according to the Scriptures contained in this devotional?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Is there anything in your midst you know needs to be disposed of?

APPLICATION: Let's seek the Lord to ask Him if there is anything we have, or are doing that we need to eliminate in our life.

Let's Pray...

Father, thank You for Your Word.  Thank You for Your guidance and wisdom.  Show us those sinful things we need to get out from our midst.  In Jesus' precious name, amen…

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
