On The Shelf

...pray without ceasing, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Well, it's that time of year again where we can be inundated with a barrage of commercials on weight reduction plans, and fitness memberships.  Don't worry if your tired and lack energy because there will be commercials advertising everything from energy drinks to hormone supplements and testosterone.  Let's face it, if we need power and energy someone claims to be able to deliver it in a package or program.

Well long before the mega corporations of the world decided loss of energy made for good profit, a solution had been around - it is called prayer.  Prayer is a pivotal part of our life, both spiritually and physically.  As I have said before, prayer is the hose between the Lord and us - it is how we obtain our fuel to do what we have been called to do.

Without prayer we are disconnected from God and we will operate on our own abilities, which is scary when you really think about it. I have found when I do this I come to the end of myself and realize I am becoming independent and going in the wrong direction.    Let's face it, if we are not praying regularly to God, seeking His will and way to deal with every issue, then we will be likely to do things wrong.  If we are going to do things wrong then God will not use us in ministry.  We will be put upon the shelf until we are willing to surrender and submit to Him, and this starts with prayer.

We must remember we are in a battle with Satan and his demonic fallen angels.  Their objective is to keep us from being used in ministry and to destroy our lives.  We are told to be praying for our brothers and sisters in the Lord.

For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.  Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. Stand therefore...praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints. Ephesians 6:12-14, 18 (NKJV)

Speaking of the importance of prayer, Corrie Ten Boom said, "Don't pray when you feel like it.  Have an appointment with the Lord and keep it.  A man is powerful on his knees."  This statement really emphasizes how we need to structure prayer into the proper place of priority it should hold in our lives.

John Bunyan said, "Prayer will make a man cease from sin, or sin will entice a man to cease from prayer."   I think this makes perfect sense; after all if we're talking to God then we probably won't be listening to the devil.

I want to encourage you to meditate upon these things.  Let's not allow the enemy to distract us from tapping into the power of God.  Let's not allow the enemy to tempt us into walking in our own power.  Let's not allow the enemy to cause us to be put on the shelf.

STUDY QUESTION: According to 1 Thessalonians 5:17 how often should we be praying?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to pray about everything?

APPLICATION: Let's choose to make prayer the foundation of every decision we make.

Let's Pray...

Father, we thank You for allowing us to be used in the work of Your Kingdom.  We invite You into our lives today and ask You to use us mightily.  May our prayers be in alignment with Your perfect will.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be Blessed, Pastor Scott
