The New Years Resolution

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. 2Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV)

As I was out jogging this morning I could see many new joggers out running.  The New Year always ushers in new resolutions or declarations of changing something in our lifestyle.  For many it is as easy as exercising and eating better.   Not that exercising and eating better is easy.  If it were then there would be no need for a recommitment to do so.

The point I am making is it can be a fight in our flesh to do what is best and right.  It isn't just food and exercise either as there are ongoing struggles in many areas of our lives.  Some seem to pop up every now and then while others continually plague us.  It can be a stronghold of the enemy such as a habit, or it can be his condemnation of our past acts; either way we can find ourselves feeling as though we are losing the battle.

Q:    What should we do when we find ourselves in this type of battle?

I think it is important to first remember we are.  This can only be done as we choose to focus on who we are as followers of Jesus Christ.  According to 2Corinthians 5:17 we are a new creation; the old person we used to be is no longer and we have been made new.

Next, we need to let go of those things we have done improperly in the past.  We need to bring them to the cross and confess them for what they were and know the blood of Jesus is sufficient to cover them.

Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, Philippians 3:13 (NKJV)

Last, but equally important, we need to move forward.  It's time to be used as a vessel of honor and this can start today.

Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 2Peter 3:14 (NKJV)

I want to encourage you to mediate upon these things today.  Let's choose to be resolute in walking in newness of life.  Let's choose to allow God to use us as an instrument of righteousness.  We do not have to strive to be used, but we need to yield to God's will for us in every situation.

STUDY QUESTION: According to the Scriptures in this devotional what can we learn about our identity and God's will for our life?

PERSONAL INVENTORY: Are you willing to forget those things which are behind and begin reaching forward to those things which are ahead?

APPLICATION: Let's be diligent to be a person of peace, seeking to do God's will in every situation.

Let's pray...

Father, Thank You for reminding me of who I am in You.  Forgive me for those times where I have allowed the enemy to condemn me for my past or have forgotten who I am in Christ Jesus.  I choose to be used as a vessel of honor in Your hands today Lord.  I invite You to use me.  In Jesus' precious name, amen...

Be blessed, Pastor Scott
